A top Pentagon official began interviewing Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl on Wednesday morning at Fort Sam Houston in Texas, Bergdahl’s attorney, Eugene Fidell, confirmed to The Hill. Maj. Gen. Kenneth Dahl has been tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding Bergdahl’s 2009 disappearance from his Army base in Afghanistan. Dahl was appointed to the case in mid-June and Fidell told Reuters last week that Dahl is expected to complete the probe within 60 days from his appointment.

An Iraqi doctor encouraged security officers at Brooke Army Medical Center to shoot him earlier this month after telling others that he planned to free accused Fort Hood shooter Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a federal agent testified Monday. FBI counterterrorism and military intelligence operatives took a hard look at Senan Kahtan Abrahem after he went to Fort Sam Houston on Jan. 6 and approached an information booth at BAMC about seeing Hasan, according to testimony at a bail hearing Monday for Abrahem. Abrahem, an immigrant living in San Antonio, was indicted last week on a federal charge of making a...

WASHINGTON, May 13, 2005 – Defense officials have used the base realignment and closure process to transform the way military medicine operates. Medical facilities will become more joint, they will consolidate where patients reside and they will become state-of-the-art. "We want to rival Johns Hopkins or the Mayo Clinics," said Dr. William Winkenwerder Jr., assistant defense secretary for health affairs. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld delivered his recommendations for base realignment and closure to the BRAC Commission today. The medical recommendations are part of this process. The recommendations mean changes to military medicine in the nation's capital and San Antonio,...

500 soldiers were assigned to Fort Sam Houston FORT SAM HOUSTON - While many Texas families spent Sunday snapping up post-Christmas bargains, nearly 500 soldiers on this post enjoyed a last meal with their loved ones before shipping out for a year in Iraq. Most of the soldiers are Army reservists assigned to the 228th Combat Support Hospital. Their ranks include doctors, nurses, X-ray technicians and other medical support specialists. Families packed a gymnasium for a brief sendoff ceremony and then they had lunch together in a Fort Sam Houston dining hall before the gear-laden soldiers boarded planes to fly...

During Vietnam I was sent to Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio for medic training. The city is home to several military installations and the citizens, at least in my experience, were always friendly. My first week there, several of us went downtown in hot pursuit of the Alamo. It was apparent we were soldiers as back then you didn’t see many teenagers sporting extreme crewcuts. We asked a strolling middle-aged couple for directions. They graciously walked us there, even though it was obviously out of their way. The shrine of Texas liberty wasn’t, as I’d imagined, smack dab in...
