Full title: Breathtaking video shows installation of final section of the World Trade Center spire as it's fastened to America's tallest building A camera attached to the bottom of One World Trade Center's highest component has provided dizzying footage from the top of New York City's tallest building. The final section of the spire, adorned with an American flag, was lifted by crane to the top of the skyscraper on Friday.A GoPro camera mounted near its base documented the careful rise of the iron piece, as dozens of construction workers watched in awe. With the twists of a few final bolts, the steel spire atop One World Trade Center was installed Friday morning — raising the building’s height to a symbolic 1,776 feet. A sea of construction workers stared into the blue spring sky with pride and delight after the finishing touches were applied about 8 a.m.

One World Trade Center is getting its mouth washed out with soap. A day after the Daily News exposed the racist and sexist graffiti inside a building that’s supposed to symbolize national unity, workers were ordered to clean the mess and paint over the filth. Meanwhile, Port Authority police launched an investigation—and dispatched officers with cameras to the men’s rooms Monday to take pictures of the heinous scrawls. They’ll hit the ladies’ rooms in the still-under-construction building on Tuesday. …

Behold, the new One World Trade Center — the unfinished, imperfect end-product of maybe the most anguished public soap opera ever to bring forth a single building. Still in a raw state, it’s already cause to celebrate. The nearly $4 billion, largest, most fought-over piece of the puzzle in downtown’s epic skyline restoration turns out to be a gentle giant, graceful and humane as the Twin Towers were not. Architectural eggheads will sneer at it, but the masses will just as surely love it. Include me in the common rabble. What scant pleasure the old towers afforded lay in their...

Does 'Freedom Tower' Height Fulfill Prophecy? News this week that the new World Trade Center Freedom Tower surpassed the height of the Empire State Building to become New York’s tallest building is stirring even more interest in America’s bestselling Christian book and video documentary – both of which contend the country is missing the spiritual warning of 9/11 by simply building higher, bigger and stronger structures after the worst attack on the homeland in history. The Freedom Tower isn’t expected to reach its full height for at least another year. When complete, One World Trade will stand at 1,776 feet,...

(CBS/AP) On Monday, the new One World Trade Center is due to reach and surpass the height of the Empire State Building, to become New York City's tallest building. Workers will be putting steel columns in place that will make the unfinished frame of the building a little more than 1,250 feet high—the level of the Empire State Building's highest observation deck. The tower still isn't as high as the antenna that sits on the Empire State Building. (Experts usually don't count antennas or flagpoles when measuring building height.) The "Freedom Tower" isn't expected to reach its full height for...

Giant projects such as the reconstruction of 1 World Trade Center, or Freedom Tower (pictured), always end up costing more than the original estimates because “that’s just part of the way the world works,” Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday.

“It would be really naive on any big project to say it’s never going to come in for more,” Bloomberg said.

NEW YORK — The agency building the new World Trade Center has let costs get out of control, with the estimated price tag soaring nearly $4 billion over the last four years, auditors said today. Navigant Consulting said the project is now expected to cost $14.8 billion, 35 percent more than the last estimate, of $11 billion, in 2008. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie ordered the review of the World Trade Center site's owner, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, after the agency's board voted to raise bridge and tunnel tolls...

When it is completed, it will be the tallest building in Manhattan and one of incredible poignancy for New York City. One World Trade Center reached its 90th floor this week - with just 14 more floors to go until the top. The structure can now be seen from all five boroughs of the city. Stunning pictures showed how the area has been reborn since the 9/11 attacks more than a decade ago where almost 3,000 people lost their lives in the worst ever terrorist attack on American soil. Towering symbol: The fog rolls out across downtown Manhattan, captured from the...

There is nothing wrong — and much that is right — with building a national monument to memorialize the nearly 3,000 people killed in the 9/11 attacks a decade ago. The awful events of that day traumatized the country — and changed it. The dead deserve to be remembered. Far be it from me to suggest otherwise. What I do want to suggest, though, is that what’s being built in the name of 9/11 — a staggering $11 billion worth of government-sponsored construction on the 16 acres we now call ground zero — is an example of just about everything...

Malaise: Reports from New York City say that union work rules pertaining the rebuilding of Ground Zero are going to cost taxpayers an extra $96 million. But that's only a small part of the sordid story. The New York Daily News reported Sunday that, according to the Real Estate Board of New York, "In the next three years the no-work jobs, controlled by Locals 14 and 15 of the Operating Engineers, could add $96.2 million to the cost of World Trade Center projects." The projects that would be affected "include the Freedom Tower, the transit hub, the 9/11 Memorial and...

So how far along are we towards completing the Freedom Tower? Not far along as far as we can tell. Michelle Malkin asks the same question I’ve been wondering about for the last four or five years. Why is the Freedom Tower not done yet? Malkin points to quite a few major construction projects here in the United States that took between 66 days and three years, the latter being Chicago’s Sears Tower, re-branded the Willis Tower. More perspective…

". . .The govt owner of the site, The Port Authority of NY & NJ (PANYNJ), facing a depressed real estate market is now seeking a private partner to partially own & fully operate One World Trade Center. One of the final bidders in that confidential if not secret bidding process is a company called "The Related Companies" which may be the most prominently held real estate company in the United States. . .just as important "The Related Companies" also happens to be a company which is substantially bankrolled by the most powerful Arab corporate interests in the world. These...

These are the first pictures showing the progress being made on the construction at Ground Zero in New York. Structural steel for the 1,776ft tower, which will be known as 1 World Trade Centre, has reached 200ft above street level, redevelopment officials said. Workers are now installing 16 steel nodes on the 20th-floor of the tower which will serve as joints between the steel framing for the building's podium and the steel for the rest of the tower. Chris Ward, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey - which owns the 16-acre trade centre site,...

The Freedom Tower will play host to the first lady of the free world next week and we don't think anyone will be paying attention to what she has to say. Michelle Obama wil [sic] be the keynote speaker at a luncheon for the Florida Campus Compact 2009 awards ceremony on Oct. 15, reports the Miami Herald. But the lucky guests to the invitation-only event will likely be amped to see what Mrs. Obama will be rocking in the Miami heat. Some fashionable capris? A dressy halter top or sphaghetti-strapped get up showing off the world-famous Obama guns? Maybe she'll...

The new World Trade Center, now under construction, is often considered a symbol of American enterprise. But to some union members and U.S. businesses, it represents what's wrong with the nation's economy. The contract to manufacture the blast-resistant glass wrapping the main tower's first 20 stories was awarded earlier this year to a Chinese firm that underbid U.S. competitors. Now the trade tensions between the United States and China that have arisen recently over tires, steel and paper are spreading to glass. "This new tower is going to be made out of subsidized Chinese glass, putting factory workers out of...

Here is video of Glenn Beck remembering 9/11 and asking why Ground Zero is "still just a whole in the ground" after 8 years and "is this the best we can do?" Beck points out the the Empire State Building took only 400 days to build in the 1930s. (Watch Video)

The design for One World Trade Center has attracted substantial criticism, which is to be expected with a project of such public importance. Some of the gripes have merit. Overall, the finished site will be less impressive than the twin towers it is replacing. Nicolai Ouroussoff of the New York Times called the design "somber, oppressive and clumsily conceived, the project suggests a monument to a society that has turned its back on any notion of cultural openness." Not to mention any notion of collective courage in the face of the terrorist threat. The building's most objectionable feature is the...
