Glamorous turn their minds to poverty By Annabel Crabb London January 23, 2005 Angelina Jolie is on the list. So are America's best-known Bills: Clinton and Gates. Bono wouldn't miss it; neither would Richard Gere. Or Sharon Stone. Yes folks: it's the World Economic Forum, assembling this week in the postcard-perfect alpine resort town of Davos, Switzerland, to bend the greatest minds of our generation to solving global problems. The World Economic Forum, or Davos as it is casually termed, was established in 1971 by the dashing Swiss academic Klaus Schwab to bring together the energies of business and politics...

I've noticed that some perceptive posters have succeeded in providing links which circumvent login pages at some news websites by giving a link to the 'printer-friendly' version of the news story. For the good of the forum, if we are posting from a subscription website, could we all test the link to the printer-friendly version and see whether it gets around the login page? If so could we post it, rather than the link to the main story? Thanks. Also a suggestion to the Jim Robinson: the topics list should include something like to better cover posts like this one...

For those of us Webloggers who track the media the way that sports fans follow the NFL, 2004 will be remembered as the year the mask not only slipped, it completely came off the mainstream media. SNIP . RatherGate: This is the big one Elizabeth! The Bush Air National Guard story was rehashed seemingly endlessly back in February. When it was announced that the low rated mid-week 60 Minutes II would be doing yet another piece on the subject on September 8th, most on the right simply rolled their eyes and said, "again"?? But the night that the story ran,...

The purpose of FreeRepublic.com's multiple message boards is to limit the topics for each board to particular topics. Posting the same message on all the boards defeats the purpose of multiple-boards for special topics. It is very annoying to see the same message on every bulletin board. PLEASE! DO THE READERS A FAVOR. STOP CROSS-POSTING YOUR MESSAGES!

Editor's note: Readers may also be interested in Moderate Islam or Fata Morgana? and freemuslims.org Speaks Out.There is good news to report: The idea that "militant Islam is the problem, moderate Islam is the solution" is finding greater acceptance over time. But there is also bad news, namely growing confusion over who really is a moderate Muslim. This means that the ideological side of the war on terror is making some, but only limited, progress. The good news: Anti-Islamist Muslims have found their voice since September 11. Their numbers include distinguished academics such as Azar Nafisi (Johns Hopkins), Ahmed al-Rahim (formerly...

Following the sad demise of Freebritannia [when the hosting company pulled the plug], we are rebuilding a British conservative forum for the Anglosphere. The site is known as "Anglosphere". The purpose is to help to exploit synergies between US Freepers and British conservatives. Please pop-in and have a look at the site. http://www.sterlingtimes.com/

After a series of ads in the University of Arizona newspaper railed against left-wing professors, a student allegedly reported Professor David Gibbs to the FBI for being "an anti-American communist who hates America." A series of ads have been running in student newspapers across the country charging that universities are dominated by liberal or left-wing professors. The ads are paid for by well-funded groups like Students for Academic Freedom and the Independent Women's Forum. Some of the ads encourage students to report any so-called anti-American faculty or statements made by professors. And that is apparently what happened to David Gibbs,...

What started out as a site that I put up as the result of a heated exchange with Blackelk, Angelqueen is now is a fast-growing traditional Catholic website. Nearly 50,000 hits in June. Praise God. I would like to see a bit more traffic on the forum, but hey can't have everything. Traditional Catholicism and a return to orthodoxy is becoming popular, which is a good thing. Surprisingly the traditionally minded posters who post in the forum area are not SSPX, they are Novus Ordo Catholics. Everyone seems to get along well regardless of where they worship. There is...

WASHINGTON : Presidential hopeful and Massachusetts Senator John Kerry today announced he has offered Johnny Depp first refusal of the coveted VP spot in his Democratic bid for the White House. I first saw Johnny in that scissors movie, Kerry told reporters, and I’ve wanted to run with him ever since. A source close to the Kerry campaign stated that Kerry believes Depp’s charm, charisma and intense global popularity is just the thing needed to sway voter support of post-teen females, twenty-something housewives, every woman in middle-aged America and that ‘certain section of guys’ towards the Democratic ticket in November....

I - through a no smoking support group I have been part of for about 2 years now - am supporting a very small (Usually only 3 people post - maybe a few more) political discussion group. There is one conservative, one flaming liberal, and a very knowledgable Libertarian. I just don't seem to have the time, or the energy to make educated statements to refute the liberal. Everytime he states things all I want to do is crawl through the screen and smack him around - a lot. My blood presure must raise by 50 points or more. I...

Murshed Zaheed is a 29 year old attorney from Washington, DC. He is one of the main individuals who regulates what visitors to Howard Dean’s web site can or cannot post. This is in addition to the other job titles he allegedly holds within the Dean campaign, according to one Dean staffer we spoke with. Through his conduct he has demonstrated that the Dean campaign feels they should decide what content may or may not appear on their web site in areas "supposedly" open for public posting and review. They hide behind a broad terms of service disclaimer that basically...

They can use the system as a message board and simply go to http://bbs.rblevin.net:8080/~rblevin and sign up - then log on and go to the WORLD EVENTS section OR they can use it as a mail list where all posts are mailed to the subscriber. Just go to...

I arrived at Hospice Woodside Wednesday afternoon at about 4:15 p.m. I waited for a deluxe table to accommodate the lovely floral arrangement for the Schindler Family from freeper gwb and gop man, also on behalf of talk radio in Savannah, Ga and floriduh voter. The flowers arrived before gwb and gop man and I drove them to Hospice Woodside with other decorations for Free Republic's table #8. Freepers, the theme for our table went back to the founding fathers. Printed artwork from Dover Publications was of lady liberty standing side by side with an eagle, a town crier crying...

The Democratic presidential candidates' debate Monday night really brought out the best in my generation. The event, sponsored by CNN and "Rock the Vote," was in front of an audience of 18-to-30-year-old Democrats, from which most of the questions for the candidates came. Quickly viewers learned why it is that most question-asking in presidential debates is left to people who act like adults, particularly adult journalists. Parents routinely tell their children that there's no such thing as a stupid question. Parents are liars. The debate last night proved that to be the case. (Perhaps it showed less about the questions...
