For the Good of the Forum
The_Reader_David

Posted on 01/18/2005 6:01:57 AM PST by The_Reader_David

I've noticed that some perceptive posters have succeeded in providing links which circumvent login pages at some news websites by giving a link to the 'printer-friendly' version of the news story.

For the good of the forum, if we are posting from a subscription website, could we all test the link to the printer-friendly version and see whether it gets around the login page? If so could we post it, rather than the link to the main story? Thanks.

Also a suggestion to the Jim Robinson: the topics list should include something like to better cover posts like this one ('For the good of the forum' might be a good topic, explained as suggestions/requests to fellow posters or moderators.)

That would be great!

I don't think we should try to be circumventing security or sharing passwords at PAY sites, however.

If you need a login for registration-free sites, however, bugmenot.com usually works.

Good idea.
And while we're in a suggesting mode....I'd like to suggest more topics for the Bloggers & Personal forum. There are no topics listed that cover the WOT, or Iraq, or news stories, etc.

"... if we are posting from a subscription website, could we all test the link to the printer-friendly version and see whether it gets around the login page?

You mean so that others would be free to steal the website's content?
Does that seem ethical, or merely Big-D "Dimocratic" like you find the DU'ers doing?

"You mean so that others would be free to steal the website's content?"

I don't think that's what he meant at all.

I'm pretty sure it's just so we don't have to sign up to access the page, as some newspapers want you to do.

How about fewer threads to wade through and fewer duplicate threads as well.

I think we should have a FREEPER COOKBOOK, one where people give their favorite recipes.

Alarming Election Chili and Tort-Reform Salad are popular with "Undead Thread" readers.

I think every thread ought to have an automatic post #1:

What did Bush know an when did he know it?

That way, maybe we can save some precious bandwith, there are still some of us who are cave man like and use dialup.

I'd not thought about pay-sites.

I certainly agree we shouldn't be stealing content, but

How about getting the links correct ...Period.

Linking to the WashingtonTimes is not the same as linking to the actual article!

How about people who think they're clever and make up their own headlines instead of using the actual headline?

This makes look-ups and seeing if the article has already been posted impossible........if a poster even takes the time to look. The duplicates on FR abound.

Why do people feel it necessary to re-post the same picture in the same thread? Not only does this needlessly use up valuable space on FR, it makes it most tedious for those with dial ups to load a thread.

There IS a freeper cookbook. It's called the "Clinton Legacy Cookbook".

Edited and published by our own resident chef, Carlo3b, it's chock full of favorite freeper recipes.....plus a peck of political humor and a shake of spicy punnery.

Freepmail Carlo3b if you want to purchase a copy. A fantastic publication! Every freeper cook should have one.

Note my recipe for Southern Whipping Cream Pound Cake, heheh.

When I click on a thread with a pay-site, I leave.

Good idea.

I usually buy cookbooks from PTA's or Churches, and I don't go for ones from 'healthy' communities. I want the GOOD food with taste.

Thanks for the information.

Interested in my favorite recipe, Chicken baked in cream with almonds?
