Montgomery County Board of Education President Patricia O’Neill asked the county’s state legislators Wednesday if they could help eliminate tolls for county school buses that drive on the state-operated Intercounty Connector. A Montgomery County Public Schools spokeswoman said in an email Friday the school system spends nearly $18,000 per year on ICC tolls. Buses that typically use the ICC include those for cross-county special education routes and sports trips, according to spokeswoman Gboyinde Onijala. “It would help us a great deal to make a more efficient transportation system for the 100,000 students we transport every day if we could use...

The family of Tony Day, the boy accused of killing his adoptive mother and adult sister, doesn’t understand why he’s allowed to take “field trips” while in custody. “There’s no sense in it. I mean—absolutely none,” Mike Day, the boy’s adoptive father said. In November 2012, police said Tony, then 14-years-old, shot Sue Day and stabbed Sherry Folts in the family’s Tucumcari-area home. The case has not yet gone to trial. “If the gun hadn't jammed, he'd have killed me and the little girl we were taking care of,” Mike Day said. Mike and his wife Sue were foster parents...

An eighth-grade charter school student who said she saw two classmates having sex on a bus during a group spring break trip is being punished for reporting the incident, her mother said. The girl, who goes to Dayton View Academy, waited until she got home to tell her mom what she saw. The school is punishing her for not telling chaperons who were on the bus at the time it happened. "If you tell something on a kid, you have to look for the response from that child and at the time," said Saundra Roundtree, the girl's mother. "She was...

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Parents who gave their teenage children permission to drink beer on an exchange program in Germany, where it's legal, say they're angry the school later disciplined a few students who overindulged. Parents for two of the 19 Cincinnati Mariemont students who went on the 12-day trip are suing the school, its school board and superintendent in U.S. District Court, accusing them of interfering with parental rights. The lawsuit seeks an injunction to stop the district from ordering 17 students to perform five Saturdays of community service. Two also were ordered to serve after-school detention. It also asks...
