I apologize for the vanity post--but I need some Freeper help. About 6 weeks ago, my computer started going crazy with the dreaded "pop up" assault whenever I was on-line. I noticed most of this happened when logged on to FreeRepublic--and it is those golden underlined words that someone purchased the "right to" that initiate it. For example--the Bill Bennett gambling threads will cause all sorts of on-line gaming windows to appear--many of them quite graphics intensive. It can slow things to a trickle. I have tried deleting cookies, cache, and history. I have tried blocking pop ups through AOL....

FR (Latest Posts) is my home page, and I open 2 browsers whenever I start my day or whenever I shut down and start up again. I have Panicware's Pop-Up Stopper Companion on my computer, but I have to turn it off to get the 2nd browser to launch. After I've launched both browsers and before I can turn Panicware back on, I GET A STINKING POP-UP AD! I know FR doesn't do advertising, so where in the world are these ads coming from? Any ideas? Anyone else having this problem? HELP!

Health officials around the world are grappling with a rapidly spreading epidemic of a severe respiratory ailment known as SARS. Here's a quick look at who's at risk and other basic questions about the disease. Q. What is SARS? A. SARS stands for severe acute respiratory syndrome. It's a new disease that doctors still don't know much about. Q. What are the symptoms of SARS? A. They are a lot like pneumonia or the flu. People get a very high fever -- at least 100.4 degrees. They also usually have shortness of breath or other problems breathing and a dry...

I am planning a freep against the commies in NYC when they have their Conference Against War, Colonial Occupation and Imperialism. I've come across some difficulties. The head of the FR chapter in the Tri-State area (New York) sent me FRMail and told me that I shouldn't go along with my march because it requires permits, I shouldn't march near other protesters, and because FREE REPUBLIC DOESN'T ENCOURAGE COUNTERDEMONSTRATIONS. He had a pretty poor attitude. Now, what is the purpose of Operation Infinite Freep? That is encouraging counterdemonstrations, correct? If someone could answer those questions, it would help. If I...

Free Republic and Jim Robinson's Finances Miscellaneous Free Republic Source: Free Republic Published: 07/15/99 Author: Jim Robinson Posted on 07/15/1999 01:02:53 PDT by Jim Robinson Just trying to set the record straight. Even though it's boring, I'll have to go back a few years to lay the groundwork for the story. Warning: it's boring so you might just want to skip this whole thing and go on to a real article... but for those of you who are spreading the gruesome rumors of Jim Robinson ripping off the FReepers, here's the real accounting of Free Republic. During the 70's and...

How Are Army Divisions Numbered? By Phillip Carter Posted Friday, March 28, 2003, at 3:18 PM PT Anyone watching Iraq war coverage has seen a stream of numbers go by, identifying particular Army divisions—the 101st Airborne, the 3rd Infantry, etc. What do these numbers mean? And if there's a 101st Airborne, what happened to the 100th and 102nd? The first thing to know is that the Army's divisions were numbered in the order they were created. So the 1st Division was actually the first division; then came the 2nd, 3rd, etc. There are, of course, gaps in the sequence. Today's...

It is obvious that we are going to need some sort of guidelines regarding the posting of pictures of the brutality of war, such as those broadcast by Al Jazeera today.

As always, our first preference is that people use common sense, discretion, and show courtesy to others. We are not going to define any hard rules here, but instead give some guidelines.

If in doubt as to if some picture should be posted on Free Republic, don't post it. Instead, link to the picture.

The La Quinta Inn in Myrtle Beach, SC doesn't, no doubt because Time Warner has the franchise in MB. I watched Bush's "deadline" announcement on CNN. But the Days Inn on George Washington Highway in Chesapeake, VA (literally across the tracks from Portsmouth) doesn't get Fox either. To save money, I shared the room with my mom and stepdad and they had Law & Order on (they're big L&O fans) and just after 9:30, Brokejaw cut in with the report of the first air raid sirens in Baghdad.

I recently upgraded the program (AWStats) used to generate the Website Usage pages. The old pages, though built with the new program, utilized the old format database which did not provide some fields. Those fields will be 0 or not present on the older reports.

For some reason the reports switched to GMT some months ago, I switched back to PT this month. Each switch fouled the "Hours" graph for the month of the switch.

Welcome to Free Republic!Yesterday, I had the pleasure of writing the following:Yesterday was, by the measure of distinct posters, the busiest day ever in the history of Free Republic, as 4,282 distinct usernames posted. Fan-freepin'-tastic. This beat the previous record by a dozen or two.Even more impressive, yesterday was the busiest day in the history of Free Republic as measured by total articles + replies, with a whopping 31,153. The previous record was somewhat below 30,000.Signups had their 8th highest day ever, behind 7 consecutive days after the 2000 elections. I am happy to say that yesterday was even busier,...
