PORTLAND - Tests indicated explosives residue on the luggage of a local Islamic religious leader arrested at the Portland International Airport on charges of document fraud, a federal prosecutor said Monday at the man's arraignment. A group of researchers in Tennessee and Denmark has discovered a way to sensitively detect explosives based on the physical properties of their vapors. PESHAWAR, Pakistan — The Pakistani army says it has discovered a van packed with almost 900 pounds of explosives in the country’s northwest. It says militants planned to use the vehicle in a suicide bombing. PARIS — French police neutralized five sticks of explosives discovered in the restrooms of a prestigious department store in Paris on Tuesday following a warning from a group demanding the withdrawal of French troops from Afghanistan. Agence France-Presse said it received a letter from a group calling itself the Afghan Revolutionary Front saying that "several bombs" had been planted in the Printemps store. AFP reported that the letter called for the withdrawal of all foreign troops from Afghanistan by February next year. The bombs were supposed to go off on Wednesday, the group said.

The Israeli embassy in Mexico said on Friday it had been sent a partially opened package that appeared to have been in contact with explosives. The embassy in Mexico City said the package arrived on Thursday. Sniffer dogs picked up the scent of explosives and tests later showed that the exterior of the package was tainted with traces of explosive. The embassy did not find any explosive devices but said it was taking extra precautions following the militant attacks on Mumbai in India last week that killed at least 171 people.
