"The Man Without A Country", a short story, written by Edward Everett Hale, in 1863, as the Civil War was raging It is about an Army officer that has committed treason during the Revolutionary War, and has shouted out, before sentencing after being convicted, that he wishes, no longer, to hear any mention of the United States of America. He gets his wish as the judge sentences him to life in prison to be served aboard only USA, navy ships that never touch the shores of the USA. He comes to love the USA...but no one will talk to him...
