At 3:50pm PST felt a serious 4.8 earthquake here in Sacramento. The house rocked, the pond sloshed, internet went down briefly, no damage noted. The US Geological Survey shows the quake I felt was preceded thirty seconds earlier by a 5.9 in nearby Nevada. It is possible that the Nevada quake triggered the quake in California.

Two shallow M5.9 earthquakes hit off the coast of southern Oregon, U.S. at 07:52 and 08:17 UTC on June 4, 2021, at a depth of 16.6 km (10.3 miles) and 14.5 km (9 miles), respectively. They were located around 12 km (7.4 miles) from each other and followed by 5 moderately strong aftershocks over the next 15 hours. 13 M6+ earthquakes have occurred within 200 km (124 miles) in the last 50 years. The largest of which was a M7.2 earthquake on June 15, 2005. These earthquakes occurred as the result of shallow strike-slip faulting within a deformed section of...

New research suggests that the key lies in the gases that get trapped in what's known as a fault valve and can build up ahead of an earthquake. These impermeable layers of rock can slip across a fault, effectively creating a gate that blocks the flow of underground water. When the fault valve eventually cracks and pressure decreases, carbon dioxide or methane dissolved in the trapped water is released, expanding in volume and pushing the cracks in the fault. As the gas emerges, it also gets electrified, with electrons released from the cracked surfaces attaching themselves to gas molecules and...

Yesterday, I wrote about a major M7.2 earthquake off Colombia, first reported by all networks around the world before being deleted… I started searching and found a new scientific study published on April 19, 2021 that actually reports about a shallow and fully locked part on the Caribbean subduction zone in Colombia capable of creating destructive earthquake and tsunami in the northwest region, off Cartagena. Yesterday’s M7.2 ‘ghost’ earthquake happened exactly in the region where scientists predicted in the science paper. This may be one of the reason why the powerful earthquake was deliberately hidden from the public. What do...

Weird coincidences, no? Earthquakes in Taiwan and Iran… A magnitude 5.9 earthquake on Sunday struck Iran’s southern province of Bushehr, where a nuclear power plant is located, but there were no immediate reports of major damage. The epicenter of the quake was the town of Rig and hospitals in nearby cities and provinces were on alert, with rescue teams and 50 ambulances sent to the area. Local official Gholamreza Mehrjou told state TV that water, electricity and internet have been restored to villages in the quake-hit area and people who had taken to the streets in fear of more tremors...

The quake was felt as far away as Lancaster, Laguna Niguel, Rancho Cucamonga and Ventura, according to the USGS. The M4.0 that just happened was under Lennox, CA, near Inglewood. Very deep at 20 km, so everyone is at least 20 km away. Would have been felt by most people awake in LA. Movement was thrust, probably not on any mapped fault https://t.co/UIPbVH0kw5 — Dr. Lucy Jones (@DrLucyJones) April 5, 2021 The temblor was preceded by a pair of quakes, registering 3.3 and 2.5, by about 30 minutes.

The U.S. Geological Survey put the strength at magnitude 7.0 and depth at 54 kilometers (33.5 miles). The shaking started just before 6:10 p.m. The quake was centered off the coast of Miyagi prefecture, in the country’s rugged northeast, which was heavily damaged during the huge earthquake and tsunami of 2011 that left more than 18,000 people dead. Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued an advisory for a tsunami up to 1 meter (yard) in height for Miyagi prefecture immediately after the quake, but lifted it about 90 minutes later. Officials there said there were no immediate reports of damage. The strong...

The seismo-volcanic crisis on Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland continues on March 11, 2021, with more than 35 000 earthquakes detected since February 24, 2021. The probability of an eruption is increasing and the most likely place where it might start is from Keilir to Fagradalsfjall. The Scientific Council for Civil Protection met at a teleconference on March 10, concluding that as the current situation lasts longer, the probability of an eruption increases. Processing of satellite images received on the morning of March 10 and the latest GPS measurements, confirm that magma is still restricted at the southern end of the magma...

Even though Iceland seems to be getting more press… Superintendent Rögnvaldur Ólafsson is at the coordination center of the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management, patiently waiting to see how things develop on the Reykjanes peninsula, where an eruption is considered likely. He tells mbl.is that in case of an eruption, it is highly unlikely that houses need to be invacuated in the Reykjanes peninsula. Most likely, a potential eruption would be a small one that would not put inhabited areas and infrastructure at risk. “We’re just waiting,” he states. This, he adds, is similar to what he experienced...

A powerful earthquake swarm continues on the Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland since February 24th. Over 20.000 earthquakes have now been detected since the beginning of the earthquake swarm. As the series of strong earthquakes continues, more signs of magma movement are also being detected. This has prompted the officials monitoring the situation, to raise the alert level from yellow to orange.

After the deadly earthquake came the sinkholes… Yes, over 100 sinkholes have opened up in central Croatia after two earthquakes in December. Some holes have emerged under residential houses, forcing occupants to evacuate. A central Croatian region about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of the capital, Zagreb, is pocked with round holes of all sizes, which appeared after December’s 6.4-magnitude quake that killed seven people and caused widespread destruction. Scientists have been flocking to Mecencani and other villages in the sparsely-inhabited region for observation and study. “These are so-called dropout sinkholes, and they appeared because of the specific geological composition...

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/437677/live-tsunami-alert-issued-after-7-point-4-quake-near-the-kermadec-islands From Radio New Zealand: A tsunami warning has been issued after a 8.0 magnitude quake near the Kermadec Islands. It is the third earthquake this morning following a 7.4 quake near the Kermadec Islands earlier, and a 7.1 quake off New Zealand's east coast. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says people in the East Coast of the North Island from the Bay of Islands to Whangārei, from Matata to Tolaga Bay including Whakatāne and Opotiki and Great Barrier Island must move immediately to higher ground.

Update: A third large earthquake has struck north of New Zealand. An 8.1 magnitude happened near the Kermadec Islands Region around 11:30 PT. The epicenter is very close to the 7.4 preliminary magnitude earthquake that ruptured along the same fault as a 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck early Friday local time. The second two, likely larger earthquakes, happened within hours after the first, but ruptured about 500 miles (800 km) farther from New Zealand’s North Island. The latest, largest quake prompted Tsunami Alerts across the Pacific, including American Samoa and Hawaii. These alerts are in addition to Tsunami Alerts for...

The last huge earthquake, the last really “Big One” to hit the Pacific Northwest Coast, struck around 9 p.m. on Jan. 26, 1700 — 321 years ago. Called Cascadia, the magnitude 9.0 quake caused the entire Pacific Northwest coastline to suddenly drop 3 to 6 feet and sent a 33-foot high tsunami across the ocean to Japan. The forecast for this week was for activity to return to M7.0 range in the West Pacific (between our sets of deep earthquakes). The expected M7.0 range increase has now taken place directly in the middle of the warned region, where the plate boundaries converge at the Indonesia / Philippines border. This week the warnings were issued for M7.0 range activity to develop , see the warnings on my youtube channel from January 16, 17, 18 , 2021 here : https://www.youtube.com/c/DutchsinseO...
