Powerful undersea quake hits north of New Zealand
WELLINGTON, New Zealand — A powerful undersea earthquake struck north of New Zealand on Wednesday evening, prompting tsunami warnings in parts of the region.
The U.S. Geological Agency said the magnitude 7.7 quake was centered at a depth of six miles southeast of the Loyalty Islands. The shaking was not expected to cause significant damage or fatalities on land.
The U.S. Tsunami Warning Center issued warnings of possible tsunami waves ranging from 0.3 to 1 meters (1 to 3.3 feet) for Vanuatu and Fiji. A tsunami watch was issued and then canceled for American Samoa.
The region is prone to earthquakes because it sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a horseshoe-shaped series of seismic fault lines around the ocean.

If I read that correctly looks like the threat is just to Lord Howe Island...?
So its finally letting loose over there.
Thats a subduction zone area if memory serves me.
The southern Island is a side slip zone-if memory serves me.
Hope it’s minor.
Hope they move everyone to one side of the island so it don’t flip over.

Surf’s up...and it’s summer Down Under!
Funny stuff right there!
Want some interesting tsunami reading/listening? This potential situation is closer to home. I ran across it while binge-listening to a podcast ...
Here’s the description (sources listed):
TSUNAMI II: GOODBYE CALIFORNIA Time: 46:03
“TSUNAMI II Goodbye California” This episode highlights recent scientific studies that prove an imminent Tsunami threat to the US Pacific Nothwest, explaining the dangers to the entire west coast and how the states are preparing their lowland populations for survival, as outlined in FEMA and other agency reports. We also explain the old Northwest Indian legend of The Whale and The Thunderbird, as well as a harrowing story of Tsunami survival and death in the ravaged port town of Crescent City, California.

Tsunami Part 1 was Sep 18, 2017
In 1700 there was a huge quake that dropped the NW coast about 3 feet...........

Exactly 10 years since the big one in Christchurch, NZ....daytime Feb 2011...170 people died ...most at work in downtown CHCH...Widespread damage...much of the city has been rebuilt...
South Island...
That’s probably when all the cedars died .... ground dropped on them & they all died at the same time. It’s talked about in the podcast .... just really interesting stuff. Part 1 is pretty interesting as well.
Check this out. The Pacific NW is in a great danger zone:

Amazing that the event lives on in the old Indian legends.................
The South Island is side slip. The North Island has a subduction zone fault line just off shore. The movement is about 44mm per year up there west towards the Australian plate.
The South Island side slip is at around 33mm, or so per year movement. The pacific plate moves toward the south there opposing the Australian plate.
Like the US Pacific Northwest and the plates up there, the San Andreas is sort of mixed in with the Wan DeFuca plate.
So are the plates in NZ.

That’s the article which EVERYONE in emergency management and preparedness mocks.
You’re not doing yourself any favors by citing it...
Ironically, so does Sasquatch.
There may have actually been........................
Equally amazing they can date it to the day and hour, using Japanese tsunami records!
