An 18-year-old student from Martin Luther King High School in Riverside, California, called out school officials in a board meeting on Thursday after a video went viral of a teen boy who identifies as transgender brawling with girls at the school. “Firstly, the question we must address is, why are we affirming the mental confusion of this boy and putting the safety of women in jeopardy by allowing mentally confused men to use women’s spaces?” the female student questioned during public comments at the Riverside Unified School District Board Meeting. She added that the teen boy, who allegedly believes he...

There was a low risk for advanced neoplasia after multiple rounds of negative fecal immunochemical tests (FIT) in people undergoing surveillance colonoscopy, according to a study. Molla M. Wassie, Ph.D. and colleagues examined the relationship between number of rounds of negative FIT and the risk for advanced neoplasia in individuals undergoing surveillance colonoscopy. The analysis included 3,369 individuals (aged 50 to 74 years) who had completed a two-sample FIT between colonoscopies with each round having a negative result (<20 μg hemoglobin/g feces). The researchers found that the incidence of advanced neoplasia in the cohort was 9.9 percent and decreased with...

Ducks were the melting pot of viruses that led to the new bird flu emerging in China early this year, according to Chinese scientists tracking the evolution of the virus. Ducks picked up viruses from migrating birds and passed them onto chickens. The study, published in the journal Nature, showed humans were probably then infected with H7N9 due to contact with chickens at live poultry markets. There have been 133 human cases of the bird flu and 43 deaths. The team, including researchers at the Shantou University Medical College, were trying to trace the root of the outbreak. They took...
