A mountain rescue team has been called up to Britain’s highest mountain to save a dog that refused to go any further. Maggie, a 35kg Turkish Akbash dog, was unable to continue the descent from Ben Nevis with her owners because her paws were in pain. The three women walking with the dog had tried carrying her down the 4,413ft mountain but were forced to admit defeat around the halfway mark. Lochaber Mountain Rescue came to the dog’s rescue on Saturday night, despite already facing multiple callouts for other emergencies.

Nature can be a force to be reckoned with, especially the dangers that lurk in Florida waters. While most people probably think of alligators first, it was the mud that proved to be most dangerous for one wayward dog this week. On Wednesday morning, a local good Samaritan spotted the dog, which appeared to be an elderly golden retriever, in water and mud along a canal. Golden retrievers are notorious for their love of the water, but this one had bitten off a little more than he could chew. While he was alive, he wasn’t moving and seemed to be...

The outbreak was caused by a 2019 leak of contaminated waste gas at a pharmaceutical plant that manufactures animal vaccines. The firm was found to be using expired disinfectants, allowing residual bacteria to be released through exhaust gasses. It is thought the leak began in late July and continued until late August last year. In December, it was reported that 181 people at a nearby veterinary research facility had been infected, and in January, authorities revoked the plant’s vaccine production licence. The full scale of the outbreak has not been widely reported until now. In addition to the confirmed 3,245...

A Bernese mountain dog that spent two weeks lost in the North Shore Mountains near Vancouver was rescued yesterday by a helicopter team from a cliff ledge east of Grouse Mountain. A hiker spotted Hurley on Thursday near Mosquito Creek and owner Darwin Schandor hired the North Shore Rescue team to bring him home. Tim Jones, the team's search manager said the rescue turned out to be more complicated than they originally anticipated. "The dog was well below originally where we thought. We spotted it on a ledge and it was trapped. It couldn't move off this ledge," said Jones....

Let the record show that Pat Beberg got her daughter's first homecoming hug. But when Ratchet, the dog that Army Specialist Gwen Beberg rescued last fall in Iraq, moved in for a slurpy kiss, everyone in Fridley's VFW hall sighed with a collective, "Awwwwww." "Hey, baby. Oh, you got so big -- Oh, you got so big," said the soldier to the pup. "Yeah, who's home? Who's home, huh?" The two were reunited Saturday as Beberg returned to Spring Lake Park, completing a tour of duty that unexpectedly led to a cause célèbre. Rachet arrived in October, after Beberg's efforts,...

Abused Canine Rescues Owner From Burning Mobile Home TwiceSunday, November 25, 2007 BOISE, Idaho — Candace Jennings rescued Anna, an abused stray dog, from the animal shelter. During a Thanksgiving Day fire, Anna returned the favor — twice. Anna, a blond heeler, nudged Jennings about 3:30 a.m., whining and howling. Jennings, who had fallen asleep on the couch, awoke to find her mobile home engulfed in flames. "Anna woke me up," Jennings said. "I had an awful headache. The place was filled with smoke." Jennings and Anna ran outside, but then Jennings remembered items she couldn't let burn. "I'm a...

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Sometimes rescuers need to be rescued, too. Candace Jennings was sleeping on the couch when she was nudged awake by her dog, Anna, to find her mobile home engulfed in flames early Thanksgiving Day. The blond heeler, an abused stray dog Jennings had adopted from an animal shelter, whined and howled until they ran outside. "I had an awful headache. The place was filled with smoke," she told the Idaho Statesman for a story published Saturday. But Jennings said she ran back into her burning home to save some items. "I'm a janitor in town," she...

WHAT does it take to get through to Virginia's legislators? In April they passed and Gov. Mark Warner signed a law that is going to get someone raped or killed. The law requires animal rescuers, most of whom are women and many of whom live alone, to post their home addresses and telephone numbers publicly in pounds, open their homes to the public "at reasonable hours" and make their rescue records available to the public upon request. As if that were not stupid and dangerous enough, these volunteers' homes are now subject to a warrantless inspection by the state veterinarian....
