By Mr. Curmudgeon:Many reading this column are no doubt familiar with the shocking, embarrassing, and very public fight that occurred on the floor of the Charlotte Convention Center when President Obama called for a hasty re-inclusion of God and Jerusalem into the Democratic Party platform. When convention chair, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, put the president's motion before the delegates for a voice vote, those shouting "No!" carried the day. Villaraigosa disingenuously ruled that, in his "opinion," the "ayes" won and the president's motion was carried.Critics charged that overriding the delegate's wishes was a cynical attempt by Democratic Party elites...

Starting Saturday, someone walking through Charlotte's central business district could run afoul of the law by carrying water bottles, hair spray, socks or magic markers under sweeping security rules enacted ahead of the Democratic National Convention. CHARLOTTE, N.C. A planned sand sculpture that was set to go in front of The Ritz-Carlton in uptown Charlotte for the Democratic National Convention is no longer being built, according to the hotel. In a news release, organizers said the sculpture won’t be built “in order to ensure optimal security at that location.” The sculpture was supposed to be formally revealed at an event Friday, but that has now also been cancelled. The draft language in the Democratic Party platform endorsing marriage equality has been revealed and shown to say “we support marriage equality” is set to become a tenet of the party’s beliefs. In addition to endorsing marriage equality, the language also calls for repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act and urges passage of DOMA repeal legislation known as the Respect for Marriage Act. In John Heilemann's cover story "2012=1968?," he wonders whether Occupy Wall Street protesters will do to Charlotte's Democratic National Convention in the summer of 2012 what demonstrators did to the Chicago DNC in 1968. Police forces in Charlotte, NC, are preparing for unruly crowds when the 2012 Democratic National Convention comes to town, according to recent reports. “Charlotte’s police department is already stocking up on riot gear and training officers in riot-control techniques in preparation for the event,” Newser reports. Although the city already has a few hundred trained riot police, they have decided to recruit almost every one of them for intensive riot training—just in case.
