Russia’s Ministry of Health announced Tuesday that it will be restricting abortion pill access from September 1, 2024 through 2030. Under the new restriction, a doctor’s prescription will be required to obtain the abortion pill drugs mifepristone and misoprostol at a pharmacy. Pharmacies and hospitals wishing to dispense the abortion pill must also have a special license, and they must report how many pills they have sold. This is a significant change from the current law, which allows women to get abortion pills for free from any pharmacy without a doctor’s prescription. According to The Moscow Times, the Health Ministry...

China's population is growing at the slowest pace in decades. That's according to the latest census data out this morning. There are currently 1.4 billion people living in China. That's just over 5 -percent more than a decade ago. But what has many in Beijing worried: the birth rate remains weak and the population is getting older. The number of Chinese citizens between 15 and 59 has dropped by 7 percent, while the number of people over 60 continues to rise. A demographic shift like this is likely to have significant economic and political implications for the world's second biggest...

As I say, the above demographic audit has become something of an annual tradition in this space. But here's something new that took hold in the year 2007: A radical antihumanism, long present just below the surface, bobbed up and became explicit and respectable. In Britain, the Optimum Population Trust said that "the biggest cause of climate change is climate changers – in other words, human beings," and professor John Guillebaud called on Britons to voluntarily reduce the number of children they have. "Every person who is born," says Toni Vernelli, "produces more rubbish, more pollution, more greenhouse gases and...

For a number of years now the European think tank world has been busy churning out report after report with ever more grandiose proposals for turning the European Union into a global superpower. One of the more provocative essays in this genre is titled ‘Why Europe Will Run the 21st Century', which was written by Mark Leonard of the London-based Centre for European Reform. Leonard's thesis is that Europe will dominate this century because it is based on a new understanding of power, which is embodied in the institutions and norms of the European Union. He argues that the economic,...
