‘We have, by no means overcome the legacies of slavery and Jim Crow and colonialism and racism’ America is still struggling to overcome its "legacies of slavery, Jim Crow, colonialism, and racism," President Obama told Comedy Central Monday night. Appearing on "The Daily Show," Obama was asked about how he speaks to crowds about race. How does he "skirt that line between speaking your mind and sharing your true opinions on race whilst, at the same time, not being seen to alienate some of the people you are talking to," host Trevor Noah asked. "You know, my general theory is...
  • The U.S. Economy’s Latest Growth Is Looking Increasingly Frail

The first week of 2016 has brought sinking temperatures and stocks-and now weaker estimates of economic growth for the fourth quarter. Before Monday, the U.S. economy appeared to have ended 2015 on solid, though unspectacular, footing. Many economists were estimating that the nation's gross domestic product-or the sum of all goods and services produced-grew at an annual pace of roughly 2% in October through December. That would match the third quarter's pace and fall roughly in line with average growth throughout the current expansion. But those estimates are falling, due to weak readings Monday morning on the nation'd manufacturing and...
  • Only a Racist Would Want to Expand Baltimore’s Welfare State

“I’ll have those niggers voting Democrat for two-hundred years.” — President Lyndon Johnson. The Democrat Party has always been about oppressing blacks as a way to retain political power. After their defense of slavery failed at the hands of Republican President Abraham Lincoln, Democrats formed the Ku Klux Klan and instituted Jim Crow laws. The Welfare State, created by Lyndon Johnson through The Great Society in 1964 (just a year after that quote), might have started with good intentions. In reality, though, it has turned out to be just another malevolent tactic designed to protect Democrats at the expense and...
  • Carter Clinton Obama Legacy: They Did Build That - America Built the Panama Canal

Perhaps Jimmy Carter's most infamous act was signing the Panama Canal Treaties. The Panama Canal - We Did Build That - he gave it away to Panama with the stroke of the Presidential pen. Now, most of the ports on both sides of the Isthmus of Panama are owned by the People's Republic of China. A Chinese company manages the locks for the canal with 25% of them operated by the People's Liberation Army of China. For all of the Shah of Iran's shortcomings, Carter's lack of diplomacy brought down the Shah, an ally of the U.S. and a friend to...

Don't go wobbly on us now, Ben Bernanke Barack Obama's home state of Illinois is near the point of fiscal disintegration. "The state is in utter crisis," said Representative Suzie Bassi. "We are next to bankruptcy. We have a $13bn hole in a $28bn budget." The state has been paying bills with unfunded vouchers since October. A fifth of buses have stopped. Libraries, owed $400m (£263m), are closing one day a week. Schools are owed $725m. Unable to pay teachers, they are preparing mass lay-offs. "It's a catastrophe", said the Schools Superintedent. In Alexander County, the sheriff's patrol cars have...

Former Shelby County Commissioner Walter Bailey said Monday that the Nikki Tinker ad featuring pictures of a Ku Klux Klan rally and denunciations of incumbent Congressman Steve Cohen's vote not to remove the statue and remains of Nathan Bedford Forrest from a Memphis park "has nothing to do with race." Asked if injecting the incendiary television images into Thursday's 9th Congressional District Democratic Primary contest would be seen as racially divisive, Bailey said: "That may be an ancillary side of it, but that's not the main focus, and it's not the intended focus." Cohen's campaign pushed back vigorously on the...

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Wednesday that his country would continue to acquire nuclear technology and challenge what he called "Western fabrications." Speaking to a crowd of thousands in Semnan, a city 155 miles east of Tehran, Khamenei said most countries believe that "nuclear energy should be taken away from the hands of a few powers," state media reported. "The Americans open their mouth and close their eyes and say whatever they want, such as 'the world opposes enrichment,' Khamenei said, referring to Iran's enrichment of uranium, which the U.N. Security Council has called on...
