Seventy-three years ago today. Here's some covers in commemoration, with the last report sent by Irving Strobing, who survived the war. A nice detailed of the report here. Right up to the end we kicked butt and took names. [excerpt] The Americans and Filipinos on shore, unaware of the confusion in the Japanese ranks and still reeling under the effects of the bombardment, met the enemy with every weapon they could muster. One 2-gun 75-mm. battery near the tail of the island, just east of North Point, had never disclosed its position and it opened fire, together with some 37-mm....

On this day in 1945, the battle to liberate Corregidor Island began. Lasting nearly 2 weeks, Corregidor was finally recaptured by American and Phillipine forces. "I see that the old flagpole still stands. Have your troops hoist the colors to its peak and let no enemy ever again haul it down." -General Douglas MacArthur at the flag-raising ceremony following the end of the battle.

In 1943, two Hollywood movies were made about the heroic nurses of the Philippines, “Cry ‘Havoc’ ” and “So Proudly We Hail,” but the real-life Angels of Bataan and Corregidor were almost forgotten after they were interned. The letters they wrote to their families in America never arrived and were found after the war in a Manila warehouse. Mrs. Manning later said that the prison camp had no showers, beds or kitchens. A single toilet was used by hundreds of people. Yet somehow she and the nurses persevered. They maintained strict military order among themselves, always wearing their uniforms and...

Perhaps the most difficult tour of duty is not done on the battlefield as we know it from films and documentaries. Facing the enemy in combat, the American soldier has always had at least a fighting chance. But what about the soldiers captured or surrendered by their commanders on the battlefield? Frank DeVivo doesn't like to talk about it, but he knows what it means to be a POW. DeVivo was serving in the U.S. Army on Corregidor when the Japanese attacked. The tiny, fortified island guarding the entrance to Manila Bay was a key, strategic site and had been...

HEY, JOE Return to Corregidor By MANILA - For Everett Reamer it is a strangely perfect and idyllic setting. With the glowing late afternoon sun descending slowly into Manila Bay and the warm breeze blowing in off the South China Sea, providing a soothing respite from the scorching Philippine summer heat, he along with nearly 50 other Americans relaxes and chats in a lively manner, sipping a cold beer, nibbling on snacks as a lone guitar player walks around and serenades the crowd. He has come, as have all of those gathered here - six others like him who lived...
