New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called for more “collective” action in her address to the U.N. General Assembly on Friday, especially on the issues of climate change, nuclear non-proliferation, pandemic response, and opposing wars of aggression such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Ardern’s authoritarian impulses were on display in her call for tighter regulations on Internet speech, although she insisted she values free speech and merely wishes to cleanse “disinformation” from international discourse.

Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta warned on Monday that the current inflation and supply chain crisis is taking a toll the U.S. economy. Fertitta, who also owns the Landry's restaurant group and other properties, told "Fox News Primetime" that the supply chain crisis coupled with inflation and a labor shortage is doing lasting damage to the United States, while separately urging Americans to be understanding of the hospitality and retail workers who continue to do their jobs during this crisis. Wednesday, during an appearance on FBN’s “Morning with Maria,” Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) offered a contrast of Republicans and Democrats and what each would push for if one or the other were in control of the U.S. Senate after the two Georgia runoff elections. “The president was in Georgia Saturday night,” he said. “He sent a very strong, important message to the people of Georgia, that it’s important that they vote and, of course, vote for David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler. I talked to Kelly yesterday. The sorts of things that you laid out, she is making sure all of...

Six minority women quit Elizabeth Warren's Nevada campaign staff this week, due an alleged "toxic environment" resulting in them feeling like "tokenized" minorities, according to a report from Politico. "The six staffers have left the roughly 70-person Nevada team since November, during a critical stretch of the race," says the report. "Three of them said they felt marginalized by the campaign, a situation they said didn’t change or worsened after they took their concerns to their superiors or to human resources staff." One staffer who left the campaign told Politico, “I felt like a problem — like I was there...

By 2018, it may be possible to purchase a contraceptive microchip that you implant under your skin that delivers birth control hormones automatically into your blood stream every day for as long as 16 years. That’s the vision of Microchips, a Massachusetts-based startup formed by MIT researchers who are developing a remote-controlled drug delivery microchip you would implant under your skin near your abdomen (or, if you prefer, your backside region). Without having to go back to a doctor, women would be able to switch birth control hormones on and off at the touch of a button. That’s a big...

(Reuters) - Navy Yard shooter Aaron Alexis believed he was being controlled by electromagnetic waves in the months before he killed 12 people at a Washington base on September 16, an FBI official said on Wednesday. There are no indications that Alexis, 34, was targeting anybody in the rampage at the Navy Yard in southeast Washington, said Valerie Parlave, the FBI assistant director in charge of the Washington field office. "We have found relevant communications on his electronic media which referenced the delusional belief that he was being controlled or influenced by extremely low-frequency electromagnetic waves for the past three...

Earliest evidence of fungus that takes over ants' behaviour for its own ends found by scientists. The oldest evidence of a fungus that turns ants into zombies and makes them stagger to their death has been uncovered by scientists. The gruesome hallmark of the fungus's handiwork was found on the leaves of plants that grew in Messel, near Darmstadt in Germany, 48m years ago. The finding shows that parasitic fungi evolved the ability to control the creatures they infect in the distant past, even before the rise of the Himalayas. The fungus, which is alive and well in forests today,...

At least $5 million, and perhaps 10 times that amount, appears to be unaccounted for in funds entrusted to U.S. District Court Judge Manuel L. Real, and the rival Filipino claimants to the account want the controversy-plagued Los Angeles judge to provide full details of what happened with their money. In a protracted legal action brought by victims of late Philippines dictator Ferdinand Marcos, Real had been given control over about $34 million in assets seized from a Swiss bank account and a Panamanian shell company while the Manila government, the Philippines National Bank and individuals abused by Marcos pressed...

SACRAMENTO (AP) - The Assembly passed legislation Thursday that would curb Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's fundraising by putting a $5,600 limit on donations to ballot measure committees controlled by candidates or officeholders. The bill was designed to close a loophole in a voter-approved campaign finance law that Schwarzenegger has used to raise tens of millions of dollars to support his agenda at the ballot box. "This loophole is bad public policy. It undermines public trust," said Assemblywoman Lois Wolk, D-Davis, sponsor of the bill. Wolk's bill deals with contributions made to committees such as Schwarzenegger's California Recovery Team, which don't face...

Which do you choose? A way of life in which you are the master of your destiny or one in which virtually all decisions are made for you by one ruling body or another? It’s the classic struggle facing every human on earth. Freedom or control. Truth be known, there are many who actually choose control. It makes for a well-ordered society with few surprises. In a controlled society, one doesn’t have to make complicated career choices and health care is provided. Community planners decide where housing will be placed. Committees decide what industries are to be allowed and how...

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale University researchers say their study that used lasers to create remote-controlled fruit flies could lead to a better understanding of overeating and violence in humans. Using the lasers to stimulate specific brain cells, researchers say they were able to make the flies jump, walk, flap their wings and fly. Even headless flies took flight when researchers stimulated the correct neurons, according to the study, published in the April 7 issue of the journal Cell. Scientists say the study could ultimately help identify the cells associated with psychiatric disorders, overeating and aggressiveness. Biologists have long known...

SACRAMENTO (AP) - An Assembly committee Tuesday joined the effort to clamp limits on how much candidates and officeholders such as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger can raise for ballot measure committees they control. The Elections and Redistricting Committee approved a bill by Assemblywoman Lois Wolk, D-Davis, that would allow donors to give no more than $5,600 to those committees, although the limit would be adjusted for inflation every two years. A Sacramento judge last month struck down a broader range of donation limits adopted by the state Fair Political Practices Commission, but Wolk predicted her bill could survive a court challenge...

Anti-Semitism may seem to be a static, unchanging phenomenon but in fact the obsessive hatred of Jews has a history that goes back millennia and continues to evolve.Developments since World War II and the Holocaust have been especially fast-paced and portentous. Here are four of the most significant shifts: From right to left: For centuries, anti-Semitism was the hallmark of the right and merely episodic on the left. To take the ultimate examples of these trends, Stalin's Judeophobia was peripheral to his monstrous project, but Hitler's was central to his. Even a decade ago, this pattern still basically held true....
