An Italian judge has issued European arrest warrants for 22 purported CIA operatives wanted for the alleged kidnapping of an Egyptian cleric, a prosecutor said Friday. Prosecutor Armando Spataro said the warrants allowed for the arrest of the suspects in any of the 25 European Union member countries. Italy issued warrants for the arrest of the 22 suspects within its own borders earlier this month. Prosecutors are seeking the suspects' extradition for their alleged involvement in the abduction of Osama Moustafa Hassan Nasr from a Milan street in February 2003. The suspects are all described as U.S. citizens. Prosecutors have...

Soon after arriving at the State Department earlier this year, I hung a portrait of Dean Acheson in my office. Over half a century ago, as America sought to create the world anew in the aftermath of World War II, Acheson sat in the office that I now occupy. And I hung his picture where I did for a reason.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice returned victorious from her Middle East trip, after doing what no other Bush administration official had been able to do for the past five years: getting the Israelis and the Palestinians to sign an agreement. The Rafah border-crossing was hailed as a huge success for American diplomacy and Rice got all the credit for it. "The Gaza agreement was Rice's first real 'Kissingerian moment,'" wrote columnist David Ignatius in the Washington Post, constituting the ultimate praise in the world of conservative diplomacy. But while the press has been celebrating Rice's great moment, some members of...

BERLIN, Dec. 5 - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice chastised European leaders on Monday, saying that before they complain about secret jails for terror suspects in European nations, they should realize that interrogations of these suspects have produced information that helped "save European lives." Her remarks were the Bush administration's official response to the reports of a network of secret detention centers in at least eight European nations, said to house dozens of terror suspects. At the same time, she denied that the United States has moved suspects to these prisons to allow interrogators to use torture. "The United States,"...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - First Lady Laura Bush believes U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice would make a great president but predicts she will stay out of the race in 2008. Many Republicans have been fascinated at the thought that Rice, 51, a confidant of President George W. Bush, might consider a run for the presidency. Victory would make her America's first woman and first black president but, while there is even speculation of a race against New York Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton, Rice said as recently as this week that she has no political ambitions. "I'm all for her. She...

Text size: Who will follow Rosa? By Tony SnowOct 28, 2005 Host, The Tony Snow Show WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Rosa Parks, the Jean D'Arc of the Civil Rights Movement, died this week at the age of 92. Unfortunately, the movement to which she had devoted her energies and name died long before. Parks famously refused to surrender her seat on the Cleveland Street bus in Montgomery, Ala., on a winter afternoon 50 years ago. Local officials booked her and fined her $10 plus $4 in court costs. She invited arrest to draw attention to the idiocy of enforced...

Thursday July 17, 2003 The Guardian As the CIA director, George Tenet, arrived at the Senate yesterday to give secret testimony on the Niger uranium affair, it was becoming increasingly clear in Washington that the scandal was only a small, well-documented symptom of a complete breakdown in US intelligence that helped steer America into war. It represents the Bush administration's second catastrophic intelligence failure. But the CIA and FBI's inability to prevent the September 11 attacks was largely due to internal institutional weaknesses. This time the implications are far more damaging for the White House, which stands accused of politicising...

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrived in Moscow on October 14 with a short unscheduled visit. Ms. Rice conducted negotiations with the head of the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and then had a meeting with President Vladimir Putin. The subject of the talks was devoted to the nuclear program of Iran; the officials also touched upon the current state of affairs in Central Asia and other countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Condoleezza Rice's visit to Moscow became quite a surprising political event in Russia's political life. The secretary finished her Asian tour, flew over to Paris,...

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice dodged a question Sunday about whether she could defeat Hillary Clinton in the 2008 presidential election, as argued in the new book "Condi vs. Hillary" by Dick Morris and Eileen McGann. Appearing on "Fox News Sunday," Rice was asked by host Chris Wallace: "Political strategist Dick Morris says that you are the only person in America who can stop Hillary Clinton from becoming president. Is that enough to get you to change your mind and run for president?" Rather than answer directly, Rice responded, "I'm quite certain that there are going to be really fine...

LONDON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Sunday that Iraqis had probably approved a U.S.-backed draft constitution in a historic referendum, a vote she said could reduce insurgent violence. "Most people assume on the ground that it probably has passed," Rice told reporters during a visit to London. Rice hailed the turnout, particularly in Sunni Arab areas, where she said there had been a large increase in voter numbers compared to parliamentary elections in January. Basing her figures on reports from officials in Iraq, the top U.S. diplomat said the overall turnout was about 63-64 percent,...

"Sunni Arab opposition to Iraq's draft constitution has increased the potential for instability and called into question U.S. hopes for substantial troop cuts next spring, the top U.S. Commander in Iraq said Friday (General George Casey)." _______ In my opinion, we should expect to be in Iraq a long time. I believe that we need to establish permanent bases there as we did in Japan and Germany after World War II. There would be many benefits to this strategy. Also, I advise President Bush to stay the course until the job is completed. Respectfully submitted, J. Scott Davis Veteran: U.S....

Well, Freeps, we did it. We bought a sixty-second block of time on tomorrow night's premiere of Commander in Chief on WMUR in Manchester, New Hampshire. This show appears to be a celebration of a liberal woman in power. We think that the show's producers have a good idea of who they'd like to see elected in 2008. And so, we thought it was the perfect opportunity to showcase our TV ad on behalf of Condi Rice. We're not so sure that the show's producers would agree with us, but it's our money. So, we've been answering press queries all...

WASHINGTON, D.C. - With the late afternoon sun glistening off of polished car hoods and new prosthetic limbs, wounded troops recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center here gathered to take a peek at a row of NASCAR racecars parked in front of the hospital's Mologne House hotel. The cars were lined up at Walter Reed on Sept. 7 as part of a daylong NASCAR tribute to American service members, many who sacrificed body parts in service to their country. Several NASCAR drivers and executives were on hand to show just how much they appreciated this sacrifice. "They defend everything...
