National Security Advisor Dr. Condoleezza Rice previewed the trip President Bush will begin on Wednesday. Stops on the ten-day tour surround his attendance at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Thailand. Bush will first stop in California to participate in a roundtable discussion and deliver a speech on housing and the economy. He will meet with Governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA) before attending a Bush-Cheney fundraising event. Rice said that Bush's travel to Asia and Australia would focus on reaffirming alliances that are critical to the war on terror as well as advancing fair and free trade. President Bush and...

Tue October 14, 2003 04:57 PM ET By Randall Mikkelsen WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. national security adviser Condoleezza Rice said on Tuesday that Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld remained in charge of Iraq's rebuilding despite a White House reorganization seen as diluting his power. "We are in complete agreement about this ... the Defense Department and Secretary Rumsfeld remain the lead agency in the reconstruction of Iraq," Rice told reporters in her first public comments on tensions between Rice and Rumsfeld that surfaced last week. The tensions followed disclosure the National Security Council had reorganized its handling of Iraq policy across...

One of the problems for every great democracy is how to maintain civilian oversight of the military. This is never more difficult than in those rare moments when the military offers more competence. The subject is the tittle-tattle of Washington just now, where the press with their usual partiality are reporting that Donald Rumsfeld, lord of the Pentagon, has been "demoted" and Condoleezza Rice, mistress of the National Security Council, promoted to oversee Iraqi reconstruction. As usual the story is false, but conceals something more interesting. Mr. Rumsfeld was never in charge of Iraqi reconstruction, only of the military trying...

National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice said yesterday that the United Nations would have backed the war against Iraq had it known about newly discovered abuses by Saddam Hussein.

Miss Rice said a report to Congress last week by David Kay of the Iraq Survey Group showed several instances of Saddam lying about his weapons programs to a team of U.N. inspectors led by Hans Blix. The team's failure to ferret out specific, definitive evidence of weapons caused the United Nations to balk at the prospect of war last year, she said.

White House challenges Pentagon's role in Iraq By Alec Russell in Washington (Filed: 07/10/2003) President George W Bush has ordered the White House to take tighter control over American operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, an apparent sign of dissatisfaction with the Pentagon-led efforts on the ground. His national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice, is to head an "Iraq stabilisation group", giving the White House a more active role. President Bush listens to national security adviser Condoleezza Rice in the Oval Office The change was seen as the closest the administration has come to acknowledging that the Pentagon's post-war mission in Iraq...

BARRY SCHWEID Associated Press WASHINGTON - The United States, responding to the latest outbreak of violence in the Middle East, called Sunday for restraint on all sides. The appeal from the State Department came as Arab leaders warned that a "circle of violence" could encompass the region after Israeli warplanes attacked deep inside Syria for the first time in decades. That attack followed a suicide bombing Saturday in Haifa, Israel for which the Palestinian Islamic Jihad took responsibility. President Bush on Sunday telephoned condolences to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, while Israeli Ambassador Daniel Ayalon conferred with White House and...

Women know how to make peace," the elegant Susan Taylor, editorial director of Essence magazine, told a largely female audience in Louisville Tuesday at the 11th Annual Women 4 Women Luncheon. "When women don't participate fully, things fall apart," Taylor said. Thoughts of Condoleezza Rice sprang to mind. Why is it that President Bush's national security adviser doesn't go down easy with a lot of women? Could it be that Washington Post columnist Courtland Milloy was on to something when he referred to Rice as a warrior princess. No peacemaker is Rice, or so it seems. Certainly, it cannot be...

CALIFORNIA is dreaming of Condi. A surge of interest in the future of Condoleezza Rice, President George W Bush’s national security adviser, has raised the prospect of an unusual election contest in America’s most populous state. Rice emerged last week as a possible contender for the Republican party nomination for governor of California. If she decides to leave the White House at the end of Bush’s first term, she might find herself competing with Arnold Schwarzenegger, the politically ambitious Hollywood actor who has also expressed an interest in the California job. After two years as the world’s most powerful black...

Reconstruction in Iraq Vital in Winning War on Terror By K.L. VantranAmerican Forces Press Service WASHINGTON, Sept. 29, 2003 -- The tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, dictate that the war on terror needs to be fought on the offense -- and rebuilding Iraq is part of that, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice told a national television audience Sept. 28. "After Sept. 11, we look at threats differently," she told NBC "Meet the Press" moderator Tim Russert. "We look at dealing with threats before they materialize." Rice warned against speculation or premature conclusions about Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass...

NEW YORK, Sept 28 (AFP) - The US administration is letting loose top brass on "non-traditional" media outlets to try to win support for its request for an additional 87 billion dollars to fund the stabilization of Iraq. This past week, Secretary of State Colin Powell turned up on CBS television's late-night comedy chat with David Letterman. Now National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice is expected to appear on Oprah Winfrey's popular daytime interview show, widely seen as a great forum to court women voters. California gubernatorial candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger recently paid a visit to Oprah after a whirl of negative...

Sun September 28, 2003 02:30 PM ET By Lori Santos WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. national security adviser Condoleezza Rice said on Sunday she knew "nothing of any" White House effort to leak the identity of an undercover CIA officer in July, a charge now under review at the Justice Department. On "Fox News Sunday," the top aide to President Bush said, "This has been referred to the Justice Department. I think that is the appropriate place for it." Rice said the White House would cooperate should the department headed by Attorney General John Ashcroft decide to proceed with a criminal...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. national security adviser Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites) said on Tuesday the Bush administration had never accused Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) of directing the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States. Her statement, made in an interview recorded for broadcast on ABC's "Nightline" program, came despite long-standing administration charges the ousted Iraqi leader was linked to the al Qaeda network accused of the Sept. 11 attacks. Those charges helped fuel a widespread U.S. public belief that Saddam had a role in the attacks. "We have never claimed that Saddam Hussein ......

National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice criticized the Clinton administration on Monday for allowing North Korea to use its nuclear weapons program to blackmail the U.S. during the 1990s, saying the Bush administration now had the crisis under control because the president had changed course. Rice made the comments to nationally syndicated radio host Sean Hannity, who asked whether the 1994 Agreed Framework negotiated by the Clinton White House amounted to "blackmail." "Yes," said Rice, adding, "We're not going to go back there." The National Security chief said that Bush's decision to buck domestic critics who wanted him to give...

NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISER Condoleezza Rice gave an important speech a couple of weeks ago, in which she called on the United States to make a "generational commitment" to bringing political and economic reform to the long-neglected Middle East--a commitment not unlike that which we made to rebuild Europe after the Second World War. It was a stirring speech, made all the more potent by the knowledge that it reflects the president's own vision. President Bush recognizes that, as is so often the case, American ideals and American interests converge in such a project, that a more democratic Middle East will...

There's no point in grieving about the demise of the "road map" the State Department concocted and Condi Rice announced fourteen months ago. It's clear, isn't it, that the Arabs resident in Palestine and elsewhere had and have no desire for an Arab state living in peace with Israel. Their desire is the extinction of Israel and the death of Jews. They say this all the time, they teach it in school, they preach it in their mosques. There's no reason to disbelieve them since they've suited their actions to their words with perfect consistency. Why else would they dance...

(Talon News) -- National Security Advisor Dr. Condoleezza Rice addressed the national convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars on Monday and received the organization's Eisenhower Distinguished Service Award. The enthusiastic crowd that filled the San Antonio, Texas convention center heard Dr. Rice praise them for their "important work of helping to ensure that our veterans and our active-duty soldiers receive the respect and the benefits they deserve." Rice pointed out that it's been almost two years since the September 11 attacks and said, "It is worth taking a moment to reflect and report on the strategy that America has...
