Ceasefire Oregon's successful annual gun turn-in program may be coming to an end after taking in about 6,000 unwanted guns in the last 10 years -- including more than 350 at six sites in the Portland area last weekend. Julie Wheeler, the nonprofit organization's volunteer organizer, said this year's event was postponed for five months because skyrocketing costs and the lousy economy made it hard to raise the $10,000 necessary to pay for it. SPRINGFIELD - Springfield school officials have reluctantly amended their policies for guns in schools. Now, they can only recommend that citizens leave their concealed handguns at the door. The policy had been an outright ban on guns. But that apparently violated state law specifically exempting concealed handguns. The district's legal counsel said Springfield's policy did indeed appear to be in violation. The most substantive new language says this: "Individuals with a concealed weapons permit are asked to voluntarily comply with the intent of this policy..."
