Concealed weapons now legal in Oregon schools
AP ^

SPRINGFIELD - Springfield school officials have reluctantly amended their policies for guns in schools.

Now, they can only recommend that citizens leave their concealed handguns at the door.

The policy had been an outright ban on guns. But that apparently violated state law specifically exempting concealed handguns.

The district's legal counsel said Springfield's policy did indeed appear to be in violation.

The most substantive new language says this: "Individuals with a concealed weapons permit are asked to voluntarily comply with the intent of this policy..."

It is generally illegal to bring a gun onto school property. But the law makes a number of exceptions.

They include: police officers, on-duty members of the military and anyone with a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

The rest of the state will be forced to follow suit. They're bound by the State's pre-emption law.

This is the second bomb to drop recently - the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has just been forced to stop arresting people for carrying guns in the woods during hunting season without a hunting license, for exactly the same reason (the pre-emption law).

Another great day for gun owners in Oregon... and a bad, bad, BAAAAd day for State Senator Ginny Burdick and the "Commie Mommies", who spent most of the recent legislative session trying to ban concealed weapons permit holders from schools.

BUMP... you guys... If I weren't such a cynic, I'd say
the gun-grabbers' walls were crumbling in Oregon...

Ths REALLY p*sses me off: TWO LIBERAL STATES (Oregon and Vermont) have more gun liberty than the (allegedly) "Great" State of Texas does.

Tell me about it! Texas is 25th on the rank of gun liberties according to sites I've seen! Crazy!

The trick is in the kind of legislation you get passed. Pre-emption laws are a really, *really* powerful "Tool". And the gun-grabbers can't motivate their gang of goblins to oppose them very easily... If you sponsor a law requiring Eddie Eagle to be presented in the schools, the whining mommies will come out of the woodwork to complain about it. But a "pre-emption" law? they don't even undersatand what it means.

Try it... you'll like it... (and for all of the screaming about NRA, this is one of the things they're *good* at - getting boring, humdrum, incremental legislation passed that eventually adds up to a massive defeat for the Commie scum...)

One good thing about Texas;
Texas allows non-residents to get a permit which is recognized by X number of other states. Very nice, indeed, since I live in Illinois and can now carry in several neighboring states, or on vacation, or at my second home, with reciprocity. But not in Illinois! Why do I live there? Good question!

" A new revision to the law allows people who live in states that don't issue concealed handgun licenses to apply for Texas licenses. Additional fees may be charged to out-of-state applicants to cover the cost of conducting background checks in other states. If you live in a state that issues concealed handgun licenses, check to see if a reciprocity agreement is in place. Also, if you have a permanent residence in Texas and a Texas driver license or identification card, you may apply for a license even if you do not live here for the entire year. (You must have had the permanent residence for at least six months before applying.)"

No other group works at so many different levels as the NRA. That's what I like about them. I read somewhere that they had 175 programs. There is a reason the NRA is the most feared organization by the anti's.

Gun owners should also become members of their state associations.

There is a deception in the headline. Guns were already legal in Oregon schools. A School district's illegal practice has simply been terminated.

"There is a deception in the headline"

The original headline is:
"Springfield reluctantly allows concealed guns in school"
Another case where someone changes it in a post and changes the meaning - unintentional, I'm sure but still annoying. Makes it harder to find duplicate posts, too.

No more Columbines! If some crackpot kids start shooting up the place, its nice to know that they will be dropped by a teacher with a concealed carry enabled pistol before they get off too many shots. Maybe that thought will deture the little monsters from even considering doing such a horrific thing.

Waiting for a response like yours. I'm a teacher and here is how they'll keep teachers from carrying: The School Board will make it "policy" that no employee can carry on school property. That way you'll only lose your job. That's what's being done elsewhere.

Better to risk losing your job, than your life.

Ya know a teacher in the system less than 5 years can say that, but I've been teaching 14 years and I wouldn't risk that and I teach in the inner city. I work in a fairly high risk environment. Such a policy will deter most teachers, especially those with a CCW, from taking the risk.

It wouldn't surprise me if some CCW holding faculty members force a "clarification" over which must take precedent: The law or public school policies. It will probably require a test case...and I wouldn't want to put my livelihood and my families well being to be the guinea pig!

In Utah it is legal to bring a concealed firearm onto school property if you have a concealed firearm permit. Also, in Alaska all citizens can also carry a concealed firearm provided they are not felons.

Give it some time. Texas will probably allow concealed firearms in schools in the future.

Give it some time? Time is what hurt us: 100 years ago, there undoubtedly was no law against this kind of thing.
