Almost four decades ago, when I was in Mrs. Carmichael's Sunday School class, I memorized Luke Chapter 2, (the King James version of course). It took hours of practice and study, but the words still come when prompted by the line before. Below is the King James Version with my comments for reflection. "And it came to pass in those days that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed." The world revolves around government and money. "(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria." Provides us with a...

On Friday morning, the day after Thanksgiving, while others are busy rushing around trying to get bargains on sweaters and toys, I take out my ever-burgeoning collection of Christmas music to be listened to over the ensuing few weeks. My collection, which has been amassed with the aid of two gentile friends (one religious and one not), grows each year as we jointly enjoy one of the great aspects of being an American. The collection includes a wide range of music from classical to pop to rock to country to folk to soul to blues and even punk rock. When...

OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - A loud noise coming from an unattended box that turned out to be Christmas music prompted a security alert at the Oklahoma City airport on Friday that closed most of the facility for four hours, officials said. An unidentified caller notified the airport of noises coming from a box in the baggage claim area about 9:30 a.m. local time and the police bomb squad was summoned, airport spokeswoman Karen Carney said.

LOS ANGELES – Hugh Martin, the composer-songwriter whose works included "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "The Trolley Song," died Friday. He was 96. He died from natural causes at his home in Encinitas, Calif., said Martin's niece Suzanne Hanners. Martin and songwriting partner Ralph Blane co-wrote such catchy tunes as "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "The Trolley Song" and "The Boy Next Door" from the musical "Meet Me in St. Louis."

The self-proclaimed "toughest sheriff" in America, Phoenix's Joe Arpaio, who has survived six separate inmate lawsuits trying to stop him from playing Christmas music, will begin playing the tunes again this year - starting Monday with "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,""Frosty the Snowman" and "Feliz Navidad." The 8,000 inmates also will hear, among others, "A Christmas Kwanzaa Solstice," "Over the Skies of Israel," "Ramadan," "Llego a La Ciudad," "Let it Snow" and "Rodolpho El Reno de la Nariz Rojita." "Maybe the holiday music can help lift the spirits of the men and women who are away from friends and...

Garrison Keillor, self-appointed cultural representative of regular old Americans, ruffled some feathers yesterday with a mildly xenophobic rant about Christmas: "...all those lousy holiday songs by Jewish guys that trash up the malls every year, Rudolph and the chestnuts and the rest of that dreck. Did one of our guys write ‘Grab your loafers, come along if you wanna, and we’ll blow that shofar for Rosh Hashanah’? No, we didn’t. Christmas is a Christian holiday—if you’re not in the club, then buzz off."

Sheriff Joe Arpaio - the self-proclaimed "toughest sheriff" in America - likes Christmas music, especially "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and anything by Alvin and the Chipmunks, and apparently he thinks the 8,000 inmates inside his Phoenix jail should, too. So it was with some glee that his Maricopa County office announced Thursday in a red-and-green press release that the "sixth and perhaps final lawsuit" brought by inmates to stop the sheriff from playing the holiday songs all day, every day, during the holidays had been dismissed in federal court. "We keep winning these lawsuits. Inmates should stop acting like the...

Remember back in 1970, when you heard that (horrible to some) rendition of “Jingle Bells” by the Singing Dogs? Well, you may not realize this, but those dogs got their start about 15 years earlier, in 1955. “Jingle Bells” was originally part of a medley of tunes sung by the Dogs, beginning with “Pat-A-Cake”, “Three Blind Mice”, and then “Jingle Bells”. The 1955 RCA Victor release also included the effects of a carniv(or)al to showcase their talent, including that of a carnival barker. The record was complemented with a faithful (well, as faithful as could be expected) rendition of Stephen...

I have been listening to and collecting Christmas music for over 30 years now. During this time, I have collected well over 3,000 songs. I consider practically every song in my collection to be of high quality and in the spirit of the Christmas season. My point is that there is a huge library out there of excellent Christmas music. My question is, why is so much of what we hear on the radio, at the shopping malls, and even in the movies, so horribly lame? Already there are many radio stations (including two on Sirius satellite radio) playing Christas...

Bob Dylan has at various times revolutionized folk, rock, country and gospel music. However, any Dylan fan who says he was not surprised that Bob has released an album of traditional Christmas songs is pulling your leg. Christmas In The Heart is another surprising move by an artist famous for surprises. Yet when you hear Dylan’s direct and obviously sincere readings of “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “Little Town Of Bethlehem,” and “The First Noel,” this unlikely exercise seems of a piece with the rest of Dylan’s work. From the very first, this was an artist who made us look...
