Garrison Keillor, self-appointed cultural representative of regular old Americans, ruffled some feathers yesterday with a mildly xenophobic rant about Christmas:
"...all those lousy holiday songs by Jewish guys that trash up the malls every year, Rudolph and the chestnuts and the rest of that dreck. Did one of our guys write ‘Grab your loafers, come along if you wanna, and we’ll blow that shofar for Rosh Hashanah’? No, we didn’t. Christmas is a Christian holiday—if you’re not in the club, then buzz off."

The other day someone told me that he didn’t like to listen to Jews singing Christmas music. Barbara Streisand was mentioned. Apparently, she has a Christmas album.
So when a non practicing Jew (Irving Berlin) marries a Catholic, raises his kids Christian, and celebrates Christmas..its some sort of Jewish conspiracy????

I’m a Christian composer and if I had had the inspiration to write a proper Jewish song, I would have. As it is all Christmas music is in honor of a Jew anyway. Garrison Keillor suddenly, after much garbage coming out of his mouth about this country, etc, has the nerve to criticize someone who has contributed beauty to the arts. As usual, he opens his mouth and his brains fall out.

On the one hand....just goes to show, if you scratch a liberal deep enough, you’ll find a bigot.
On the other hand, in spite of his intemperate language, it is a little odd that, for a Christian holy-day celebrating Jesus, Jews—who reject Jesus—would feel OK about writing songs about it.
The old carols are all Christian hymns, after all, the new “secular” “carols” (which include White Christmas, etc.) leave out Christmas itself, focusing just on the “holidays.”
I think Christmas especially shows the often ambiguous religious relationship between Christians and Jews.
Memo to Mr. Garrison: Like it or not, Jesus was a nice Jewish boy. He really was. His father Joesph, they were carpenters. Used to make crucifixes for the Romans. Oy, they were glad to get the work.
