    - Photo: GreatLeap.com.my The cake pictured above is a Malaysian Lapis (layer) Cake. It’s usually made as a ‘spicy’ cake with cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and it can take an entire day to make one. They are generally purchased for special occasions in Malaysia. If you’re up for trying something as colorful but not quite as gruelling to make, the blog ‘Mel’s Pantry Kitchen’ has posted a simplified ‘rainbow’ cake: https://melspantrykitchen.blogspot.com/2012/09/rainbow-lapis-legit.htmlhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarawak_layer_cake_______________________________________________________ I’ve been seeing an Arby’s commercial lately about a Chicken-Pecan salad sandwich. It looks wonderful in the ad, but there isn’t an Arby’s very convenient to us here, so...

If bourbon is the social lubricant of the South, then mayonnaise is the culinary ball bearings. It makes your deviled eggs, chicken salads, potato salads, pimiento cheese, and tomato sandwiches sing. So why master homemade mayonnaise? For starters, it’s healthier and tastes better than store-bought (yes, even Duke’s). Plus, making mayo will make your grandmother’s heart full.

I've always been a fan of chicken salad. But I haven't made it at home often, because I just couldn't find a great recipe. Now I think I've got one, and I'm sharing it today. When I first read through the recipe, I thought it was a bit odd to grate the hard boiled eggs. But I do like hard boiled eggs in chicken salad, so I gave it a try. It was a little messy, but doable, and the finely grated eggs don't overpower the chicken in taste or texture. I had never added horseradish to chicken salad before,...
