A MILITARY PRAYER Many people have never heard a Chaplin give a military prayer. Many of you have never attended a military church service. Let me warn you that some military prayers are-----striking and strongly worded. I am also no Chaplin but I would like to say a prayer for our children soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines that are on duty in over 100 countries around the world.

Return to Main Page Mel Gibson’s Chaplain Suspended An exchange of letters between Father Somerville and his superiors (Introduction by Michael J. Matt) Reprinted from The Remnant 21170 W. Linwood Drive NE, Wyoming, MN 55092 www.RemnantNewspaper.com From our vantage point as outside observers, it appears that there were three events which may have led to Father Stephen F. Somerville’s suspension by the Cardinal Archbishop of Toronto on July 15, 2004. In 2002, Father Somerville wrote an “Open Letter to the Church” in which he renounced his own career with the prestigious (if infamous) International...

FORT LEWIS, Wash. (AP) - A Muslim chaplain cleared of espionage charges after being imprisoned for 76 days resigned from the Army on Monday, saying officials never apologized or allowed him to retrieve his belongings from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Capt. James Yee, 35, ministered to prisoners at Guantanamo Bay naval station, where the military is holding suspected Muslim terrorists. He was taken into custody after the military initially linked him to a possible espionage ring at the Guantanamo Bay naval station in Cuba. "Those unfounded allegations - which were leaked to the media - irreparably injured my personal and professional...

The hours before a war starts can weigh on a combat pilot's mind. Chaplain Matthew Boarts knows, because he prayed with U.S. air crews on the eve of the Iraq War. Some ached at the thought of the carnage to come, Boarts said. "They were asking for prayers for the Iraqis. That really struck me," said the 36-year-old captain at Tucson's Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. "People think we're so removed in the military. But they were very much aware of the human side." Comforting troubled warriors is something Boarts seems to have a knack for doing. The Air Force recently...

Overlooking the Problem - Tolerance and Theological Blindness Last autumn, following the arrest of a Navy chaplain suspected of spying for al Qaeda, the Pentagon began a review of the way it recruits Muslim chaplains. At the center of the probe is the Graduate School of Islamic and Social Studies in Leesburg, Virginia, which had trained nine of the twelve Muslim chaplains in the Armed Forces and many prison chaplains. The graduate school is funded by the Saudis and is part of the effort to spread Wahhabi Islam. As anyone who bothers to look will discover, Wahhabism, which fueled the...

Chaplain Tells Of U.S. Building Schools And Good Will In Iraq By Greg Jefferson When a 19-year-old soldier was killed last November in Iraq, the miserable job of going through his belongings fell to Rabbi Carlos Huerta. But what the Army major and chaplain found heartened him. "He had pictures of the children," Huerta said during a talk Sunday afternoon on the North Side. The photos showed beaming youngsters in the Iraqi city of Mosul. They'd been won over by the new schools, clinics and hospitals that U.S. soldiers built, said Huerta, the Jewish chaplain at the U.S. Military Academy...

CAMP RED CLOUD, South Korea — A flag colored in part with the blood of U.S. prisoners of war and draped over their coffins for funerals at stalags will be used one last time at Arlington National Cemetery next month. The flag will cover the coffin of its owner, retired Sgt. Robert Hopkins. The former enlisted chaplain from the 38th Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, used the flag at more than 300 POW funerals during World War II. It will be transported to the Virginia cemetery from its home at the 2nd ID Museum at Camp Red Cloud, where...

NEW YORK -- In the first public appearance since his exoneration, a Muslim Army chaplain who had been suspected of espionage thanked supporters of civil liberties. James Yee was arrested last year in an investigation of suspected espionage at the U.S. military's detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He was imprisoned for 76 days before all charges against him were dropped. He appeared Friday night at a Chinatown benefit to raise money for his legal bills, although a gag order limited his ability to talk about the case. "I'm not here tonight to talk about my case but to thank...

Classification: UNCLASSIFIED Chaplain Unger is from MCCDC Doctrine Division. He's been in Iraq for the past four months. 30 May 2004 Dear Friends, This is my third letter from Iraq. I have been working myself into the right mood to do this. Today is the day. In my last two letters I have leaned toward being as upbeat as possible. This time will be different; today I want to talk about Memorial Day, but I will start off by giving my perspective on the Abu Ghraib prison problem. First off, the investigation into the abuses at Abu Ghraib began back...

Thou shalt read these billboards. A chaplain is renting 10 billboards to teach the Ten Commandments. Each month, a different commandment goes up at the direction of Steve Casey, a chaplain for Evergreen Presbyterian Ministries in Stonewall, 15 miles south of Shreveport. This month, it's No. 3: ``You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.'' For those who might not get it, there's a footnote: ``God's last name does not start with a D.'' Casey said God gave him the idea while former Judge Roy Moore of Alabama was fighting to keep a stone monument of the...

Subject: A Chaplain's Perspective on Activities in IRAQ Date: Wed, 9 Jun 2004 07:26:20 -0400 Steve Unger is no ordinary Chaplain; he's a long-ball hitter. Former Navy surface warfare officer with years of black shoe experience. He did a tour as 3d Medical Battalion Chaplain on Oki during mid-90's. As 3d FSSG's G-3, I watched him prevail when the battalion was going through some tough times. At Doctrine Division, he's written with out a doubt the best commander's guidebook for spiritual readiness the Corps has ever seen. He's been over there for nearly six months, and we at MCCDC hope...
