ROBIN WILLIAMS: Human Being In January 1997 my family and I PCS-ed from Camp Lejeune to Okinawa. On the trip from the east coast to LA where we would board the Freedom Bird, we decided to take a few days for sightseeing in San Francisco. We stayed at the BOQ in Naval Station, Treasure Island. One night my wife sent me to the convenience store for some milk. On the way I saw one of the old boat hangars lit up. There was a beehive of activity around the huge building, with cars and people coming and going from the parking lot. I approached the security guard and asked what was going on. He explained that Treasure Island was being turned over by the government and that Hollywood studios were now using the old to hangars to make movies. Fascinated by this discovery, I asked what movie was being made in that hangar. He said it was a film called Flubber starring Robin Williams. Robin Williams is my favorite and I asked if I could go inside. "No!" he firmly said. The guard and I continued to talk and he mentioned he was from the Bronx. What a coincidence, so am I! I then asked once again if I could go in and he said ''Well, I guess it's ok, but don't touch any equipment." Stepping inside the studio was like Alice going through the looking glass-people running around, actors, cables, lights, sets, props all over the place. I then watched the basketball scene as it was being filmed and I could see Robin Williams at the other end of the sound stage. I hurried to the BOQ and told my wife what happened, to which she said, "sure...!" "Put your coat on, dear, we're going back." In a few minutes we were watching the filming with our 16 month old daughter. In about a half hour, the day's filming ended, and Robin Williams began to leave the set. He walked in our direction, closer, closer, closer, then right next to us! My wife ran up to him with our daughter and asked for this autograph. Robin Williams bent down, lifted up our daughter and started making funny faces and voices to entertain her. Many of these voices were recognizable from Good Morning Vietnam and Mrs. Doubtfire! He asked who we were and we explained we were in the military headed to duty in Okinawa. He said how much he admired people serving in the military, gave us his autograph and wished us well.
I reflected on that thrilling encounter many times since that night in Treasure Island. Here was a major star, an Academy Award winner. He could have just walked by and not want to be bothered. Yet, he took time out to make total strangers feel important. What a splendid example of human decency, humility and concern for others. What a marvelous example for us all--to love our neighbor as we love ourselves!

Psalm 91
"Soldier's Prayer"
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."
Surely He will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge;
His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.
You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked
If you make the Most High your dwelling - even the Lord, who is my refuge then
no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent.
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;
they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
you will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
"Because he loves me," says the Lord, "I will rescue him; I will protect him,
for he acknowledges my name. He will call upon me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.
With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation."

Greetin's to Thee, Canteeners, Troops,
an' All th' Ships at Sea!
An' a fine an' merry Sunday, to all me old friends, an' th' friends I've yet t'meet! Fiona is my name, an' such as I 'ave once again, took me leave o' Sarge, good an' kind man that he is, to use his infernal machine to speak to all here in this Canteen place o' our own.
Now, a point o' somethin' that confuses: why, now, should this contraption be called, a "laptop"? Sure, an' on a table it sits, wi' lights all a-flashin' an' things, so where's this lap, then? Mark ye, I know a wee bit abou' laps, now - many's th' lap I've perched upon, to be sure - an' 'tis th' truth that th' leprechaun hasna' been born, that can be caught when one doesn't wish to be, but there HAVE been times, when th' catchin' can be fun... (giggle)
An' has any here paid th' mind, o' just what happened to me Sarge this week, eh? Hot brass pieces that now mark that handsome face o' his, forevermore! Ah, if there were just a way to help me poor Sarge in his distress...
Now, Friend Captain Tonkin, such a day it is, for the meetin' on Sunday, now. An' such a fine place ye've made for us all, here, for th' friendly meetin' says I! An' please, everyone, if ye might be puttin' in a kind word or two in your Sunday meetin's, for th' lads an' lasses who are scattered to the winds this day, all t'keep things safe an' sound for us all? I daresay, ye'll be glad ye did, an' might th' further blessin' o' th' Irish come upon you all!
Might I see if I could stay a bit, are ye thinkin'? A good jabber an' a perch is just th' thing between friends, an' that's no Blarney...

Well, now, look who's arrived! Spotsy, it is, to be sure! Well, I best give ye what I know, thus far...
Well, as ye know, after that day o' hot pain an' surprise, Sarge, th' dear man, would ye believe it, couldna stay abed, like he was told? Sure, an' up an' out of his bed he was, quite th' wrong thing t'do, wi' no rest in him at all!
An', friend Spotsy, that ruddy bandage that he must wear! Such a marring o' that otherwise handsome face. Th' poor man can't even get a right an' proper shave done, wi' that horrid thing an' all, so his face looks e'en worse than last! It's simply not fair, says I, an' I've a right mind an' mood to do sometin' about it!

Ah, but if only Sarge might see this, now! A bandage, sealed wi' a kiss, an' all! Someone must like me Sarge speciallike, for this to be made.
An' might this be a new friend I've yet t'meet? Jen, is it? Well, 'tis a right pleasure, it is, for th' meetin'! Fiona is my name, just a wee friend o' Sarge from some time past, but now poppin' in an' out o' th' Canteen to pay my respects, to be sure.
So, might ye be stayin' for a bit, Jen? A perch an' a good jabber is always a thing t'share when in th' company o' friends!

Fiona, tell Sarge to follow doctor's orders and not to worry about marring his beautiful face. Scars add character to men.
Besides, Sarge will have fun employing his talents in weaving a thousand different yarns about how he got those scars.

Sure, an' I'll tell 'im that very thing, Spotsy. An' thee an' I are o' a mind, about rugged, handsome men, are we not? (giggle)
An' I shall NOT be givin' any touch o' th' Blarney to Sarge - besides, several other soldiers, d'y'see, wrote down everything that happened that day, so that none get th' wrong ideas. Me dear Sarge has not a chance, now, does he?
