Later that year, Clay changed his name from Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. to Cassius X, then to Muhammad Ali. Ali initially joined the nation of Islam (promoting "the Honorable" Elijah Muhammad and Malcolm X) and refusing to be drafted into the Vietnam War.
