Global warming has slightly slowed the Earth’s rotation — and it could affect how we measure time. A study published Wednesday found that the melting of polar ice — an accelerating trend driven primarily by human-caused climate change — has caused the Earth to spin less quickly than it would otherwise.

Evidence for the earliest known Maya calendar has been found in San Bartolo, Guatemala, by researchers at The University of Texas at Austin. While excavating murals at a site in San Bartolo, two fragments were found and pieced together to form the notation "7 Deer," which dates back more than 2,000 years to 300 B.C., several centuries older than previously obtained evidence..."The Maya calendar is one of the most distinctive and well-known features of the culture and of traditional Mesoamerican peoples. It was in use for centuries before the arrival of Europeans, and some of it is still being used...

After picking up some medicine at our my local pharmacy yesterday, I asked if the Cardui Calendar and Ladies' Birthday Almanac (a Southern tradition since 1891) were available. Imagine my consternation at learning that neither has been printed for 2013. The editions for this year were the last. The Chattanooga Medical Company (now Chattem) has printed both for over 120 years. The originally made Cardui and Black Draught syrup, though they now make such brands as Gold Bond Medicated Powder (the original brands having gone extinct some time ago). The Cardui Calendar and the Ladies' Birthday Almanac were a Southern...

Has anyone successfully synced Windows Live calendar with Google calendar? I have a tried various methods that come up in a Google search, but none work. Ultimately,I want my Windows Live calendar to sync with my Android (google) tablet. But the only apps I can find for Android (Hotmail + Seven) and Remo Sync have their own problems. Hotmail installs on Andriod and links to my Windows Live calendar (as well as Google). And my Windows Live calendar then displays on my Android. But, if I turn off my Android and reboot at a later time, the sync is gone....

It comes from the land a down under, can’t you hear, can’t you hear the thunder: 2010 is the year of the calendars, and now we add Australian fashion magazine Russh’s interesting 2010 calendar to our collection. Featuring twelve of the most eclectic models — a model a month — it’s a happening visual feast combining fashion, beauty and all-around Australian quirkiness. Sadly, March may indeed be the cruelest month, as March’s selection, Daul Kim committed suicide in 2009.

Since I work as defacto manager of a purchasing department in a small company, I am curious as to why we have a dearth of giveway calendars this year. Are others feeling the same? Usually by now, I have calendars galore to supply to everyone in the company who wants one-- or even wants more to take home.So far, this year, I have two-- one of which adorns my cube from a minor vendor who has annual sales to us in the lower five figures-- another which has been given to the best worker in my department from a vendor...

SACRAMENTO — California Atty. Gen. Bill Lockyer gives a lot of speeches. Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi keeps tabs on Democratic fundraisers. Treasurer Phil Angelides makes time for reporters from coast to coast. And Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante doesn't do much — at least according to the daily calendars they keep. --snip-- ... But the calendars offer a glimpse at the work patterns of the seven statewide politicians, all Democrats — and sometimes provide a few telling details. For example, Controller Steve Westly — a former executive with the private Internet auction service EBay — keeps a busy schedule, though it's...

There seems to be some dispute about the date of the first Christmas. Part of that has to do with the Gregorian calendar, which is the one we use. At one time, Greek months had three ten day weeks. This forced them to add a month or two now and then. The ancient Hebrews, who alternated 29 and 30 day months, had the same problem. Our hour and minute divisions go all the way back to Mesopotamia. Our 24 hour day comes from pharaonic Egypt. The names we use for days and months come to us from the classical Greek,...
