Since I work as defacto manager of a purchasing department in a small company, I am curious as to why we have a dearth of giveway calendars this year. Are others feeling the same?
Usually by now, I have calendars galore to supply to everyone in the company who wants one-- or even wants more to take home.
So far, this year, I have two-- one of which adorns my cube from a minor vendor who has annual sales to us in the lower five figures-- another which has been given to the best worker in my department from a vendor only slightly larger.
People from other departments have been walking away disappointed when they came calling for calendars. Yeah, I know we could solicit them, but I enforce a strict "no solicitation" policy in this department since I feel that solicitation may be reflected in either higher prices (or failure to lower prices) by our vendors.
We've always had plenty of calendars without resorting to solicitation anyway. Sorry for the vanity, but I am wondering if anyone else has similar experiences this, for many, the last business day of the year.
The link between excessive freebie calendars and Global Warming has been long established.
Conspiracies everywhere.... You better get out your tin foil hat!
Few people use them any more, honestly. Computers with calendars and address books are more convenient, and many people are carrying PDAs or smartphones that render the dayplanner or wall calendar obsolete.
I hardly ever see a wall calendar in my clients’ offices any more.
I usually get a few calendars as gifts, and I hang them up, and notice in July that it’s still on January.
I don’t use them!
The dearth of calendars might be another ramification of there being less pirates around these days...
They’re a waste of money.
what’s a “Wall Calendar”? :)
You obviously don't have kids. I use the one on the pantry door every day and wish I had a couple others or one that was larger. Send all you don't use to me.
I think it is more related to the fact that most people now use PDA or digital calendars.
Few people use the paper calendars any more and it is unlikely to keep the business “in view” every day. I see more pens and other promotional items.
Golf promo items for one.

If you would go digital, you wouldn’t need the pantry door calendar.
An ancient promotional device that never worked, cost money, and is now obsoleted by technology.
Could be that most people have concluded that the vast majority of give away calendars are just clutter.
People are willing to pay good money for expensive individualized calendars, a sure sign of an economic boom.
I have one of those Mayan calendars. They’re good through 2012.
My step-mother gives them every year.
She goes through and notes everyones birthdays, anniversaries, etc.
Actually quite helpful.
Being someone who has handed out (literally) thousands of calendars to customers over the years I see the less frequent use of this advertising staple as a reflection of the lower and lower profit margins demended by customers.
There was a time when a vendor could afford to buy things like calendars to give away.
Those days are gone.
Send a $20 donation to four or five charities. You will soon have calendars, notepads, and a lifetime supply of return address labels...
