A bit of advice for those living near SanMo and Highland: if you drop a $100 bill, just let it go. Never, ever bend over to pick anything up within 2 miles of Highland and Santa Monica.
Source for news of a 12th floor electrical room "explosion"?
From my Arco Plaza tower vantage point, there doesn't appear to be much eagerness in the pace of the officers - lots are now standing around and milling around with no sense of urgency. However, streets remain blocked and no police, bomb squad, or fire vehicles have left.
Update: Street closures extended. Fifth Street closed between Olive and Flower. Grand Street closed from Bunker Hill to Sixth Street. A few more police and bomb squad cars just arrived.
Eyewitness. I was nearby for lunch, heard lots of sirens during lunch, and now realize why. The place is totally locked down. At least 50 LAPD are lined up around the place, spaced 30-40 feet apart. No traffic.
As some other posts noted, it was named the "Library Tower", and is still called that by most. It got the name by acquiring the air rights over the main LA Public Library building across the street (the LA Public Library sold it's rights to expand upward). Los Angeles allows stacking of air rights that allows a building to built higher than the standard maximum height, which is something like 50 stories. By acquiring the air rights over the approx 6 story LA Public Library, the Library Tower was allowed to go up to 72 stories. The LA Public Library used the proceeds of the sale of its air rights to rehabilitate and expand the LA Public Libary after a devastating fire in the 1980s.
The prospects for 75 are better than 73, albeit both are against the wall. 75 is down 0.3% while 73 is over 2% in the hole. I wouldn't bet on either, but 75 has a smaller threshold to cross to get into positive territory.
