TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Iran test-fired dozens of missiles, including the Shahab-3 that can reach Israel, in military maneuvers Thursday that it said were aimed at putting a stop to the role of world powers in the Persian Gulf region. The show of strength came as Iran remains locked in dispute with the West over its nuclear program, which Washington says is geared to producing atomic weapons but Tehran says is only for generating electricity. The maneuvers came three days after U.S.-led warships finished naval exercises in the Gulf that Iran branded as "adventurist." State television reported that several kinds...

With the recent s-storm caused by J.F. Kerry, he brought up his Viet Nam service again. This got me thinking. Whatever happened to the special form (SF-180) he was supposed to sign that would release his records? I did a news search on Google and came up dry (literally) when querying on "kerry form 180". A web search was more useful but all of it was old. Same thing with the search engine up here on FR. Just curious (but not about why the MSM gave him a total pass on this).

Fellow FReepers - I ask that you say a prayer for the family of one of my son's classmates/teammates as he lost his battle with cancer this afternoon. I had the pleasure of being his T-Ball coach this last season and getting to know him. The battle wasn't long - lasting only 6 weeks from diagnosis to his passing. But that doesn't make it much easier. It will be a difficult road ahead for the family and they could use all the power of prayer they can get. Thanks and God Bless.

Boston city councilor wants Citgo sign taken down Associated Press BOSTON -- A city councilor wants a landmark Citgo sign taken down in response to a speech in which Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez called President Bush "the devil." Citgo is a subsidiary of Venezuela's state oil company, and Councilor Jerry McDermott wants to replace the sign, which is visible from Fenway Park, with a U.S. flag. "Given the hatred of the United States displayed by dictator Hugo Chavez, it would be more fitting to see an American flag when you drive through Kenmore Square," McDermott told The Boston Herald. "I...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Times Co. (NYT.N: Quote, Profile, Research) on Thursday forecast sharply lower third-quarter earnings because of a "challenging" print advertising market, sending shares down nearly 5 percent in after-hours trading. The publisher of The New York Times newspaper and the Boston Globe forecast earnings of 8 cents to 10 cents per share, compared with 16 cents in the same quarter last year. "The print advertising market has been very challenging during July and August and remains so in September," Chief Executive Janet Robinson said in a statement.

Astronauts Lose Bolt During Spacewalk Sep 12 11:55 AM US/Eastern By MIKE SCHNEIDER Associated Press Writer CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. Spacewalking astronauts worried they have may have gummed up a successful job connecting an addition to the international space station Tuesday when a bolt, spring and washer floated free. Astronaut Joe Tanner was working with the bolt when it sprang loose, floated over the head of Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper and skittered across the 17 1/2-ton box-like truss that they were hooking up. While the washer went out into space safely, Tanner worried the bolt and spring could get into the truss's wiring...

Newsman to Tony Snow: 'Don't Point Your Finger At Me!' By E&P Staff Published: September 05, 2006 4:15 PM ET updatted 4:30 PM ET NEW YORK A not especially eventful press briefing at the White House today turned rancorous with NBC's David Gregory telling Press Secretary Tony Snow, "Don't point your finger at me," and Snow accusing the newsman of being "rude" and delivering Democratic talking points. Earlier, speaking to reporters, Snow, continuing the administration's media focus on the war on terror, accused "some in the Democratic Party" of saying "we shouldn't fight the war" and "we shouldn't apprehend al-Qaeda"...

I know there have been several articles pertaining to America Supports You, but I wanted to specifically call this out as an opportunity to simply drop the troops a message of support for the job they're doing. I heard an ad on the radio for this and, after posting a message, thought what better way to spread the word than to let the FReepers know we're thinking of them. http://www.americasupportsyou.mil Take care.

HOW SOON FOR THE IRANIAN NUCLEAR BOMB? This whole "being the President" thing is just so easy, isn't it? Why, George Bush could certainly handle the job if he just wasn't so dumb, right? OK ...let's consider Iran. In just a few paragraph here I'll have you saying "Damn, I'm sure glad I'm not the one who has to make these decisions." First: Iran is working toward a nuclear bomb. I don't care how many times Mahmoud Ahmadinejad talks about nuclear power plants for electricity, every sane person in this country knows that a nuclear weapon is his true goal....

Video: Emmy Parodies Planecrash Hours After Kentucky Accident posted at 10:31 pm on August 27, 2006 by Ian Send to a Friend | printer-friendly This looks like a case of awful timing more than awful taste (and yes, we’re aware it’s a Lost parody); nevertheless, it’s going to be a night to remember for NBC, the Emmys and Conan O’Brien. On the other hand, if the Comair crash had happened on the Left Coast, would NBC have gone through with the skit? Update: Lexington’s NBC affiliate reacts: WLEX’s president and general manager, Tim Gilbert, who was home watching the telecast...

A good friend/co-worker of mine told me this morning that his parents and aunt were severely injured in a car accident this weekend in Naples, FL. Although he is a devout democrat and card-carrying member of the ACLU, we have a close relationship in that we are intellectually honest in our debates. I kid him all the time about his carry permit being next to his ACLU card in his wallet. Tom and I have known each other for quite a while and I'd like to ask for your prayers for him and his family. At this point he doesn't...

The Associated Press Monday, October 17, 2005; 2:24 AM HYANNIS, Mass. -- U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy attempted to rescue six men who had become trapped by high tide on a jetty off Hyannisport on Sunday.
