Video: Emmy Parodies Planecrash Hours After Kentucky Accident posted at 10:31 pm on August 27, 2006 by Ian Send to a Friend | printer-friendly

This looks like a case of awful timing more than awful taste (and yes, we’re aware it’s a Lost parody); nevertheless, it’s going to be a night to remember for NBC, the Emmys and Conan O’Brien.

On the other hand, if the Comair crash had happened on the Left Coast, would NBC have gone through with the skit?

Update: Lexington’s NBC affiliate reacts:

WLEX’s president and general manager, Tim Gilbert, who was home watching the telecast with his family, was “stunned” by the intro; if station managers had known about the intro before the broadcast, Lexington viewers wouldn’t have seen it, he said.

“It was a live telecast — we were completely helpless,” Gilbert said of the Emmys. “By the time we began to react, it was over. At the station, we were as horrified as they were at home.”

Gilbert said he’ll complain to NBC, but he said an apology won’t make up for insensitivity.

Update: Mary Katharine Ham nails it.

The Kentucky plane crash happened at 6 a.m. There was plenty of time to alter the intro of the Emmys to something more respectful. It wouldn’t have been polished and post-produced, but it would have been polite.

NBC has armies of writers and producers on a show the scope of the Emmy Awards. They could have come up with something to replace the Lost sketch, and if it was really lame a simple explanation that they had replaced a planecrash sketch out of respect for those lost in the Comair crash would have been right and classy.

It was a "Lost" reference.

Period.

Drudge and the other ambulance chasers are reaching.

The MSM and now, Drudge, are looking for reasons to be offended.

Matt has crossed over to the dark side.

But, that's where the money is.

Drudge is no better than AlGore, these days.

Umm... this article is not by Drudge nor the MSM. It's a blog.

Drudge has been all over this. On his website, as well as his radio "show".

NBC is the en"EMMY". Why are we surprised?

Already a whiny off based thread about this here:

LEX 18 officials shocked by Emmy Awards’ plane-crash spoof intro

The bit was really really funny. It was a spoof on all the major nominated shows, including LOST, 24, South Park. It was really well done and obviously done weeks ago. It has nothing to do with a plane crash today.

There were all kinds of human tragedies today, some were news, some were not. Life goes on.

FReepers usually abhor PC. This is worse.

Oh, come on. You sound like a Democrat talking about Joe Lieberman.

Drudge never claimed to be on either side. He has always said, "I go where the stink is." It just happened that the stink when he arrived on the scene as the planet's first self-made internet superstar was coming out of the Clinton Administration. Did you complain when Matt made a headline out of Barbra Streisand's support of Adulterer-in-Chief Clinton while performing "Children Will Listen" at her DNC benefit concert?

I disagree. I doubt anyone who really was affected by the plane crash was watching the Emmy Awards. If they were offended by the Lost deal, I would hope they wouldn't have taken it personally and thought the whole world should stop for them.

This was the worst writing on an awards show in years, IMHO. They didn't apologize that what made it to the screen was lame.

You never know. The Emmy's came on right after a recap of the news so perhaps a lot of folks in the area had left the tube on. If I were the one making the decision (and it's easy from where I sit, of course) I would have opted to go with something else. But that's just me and that's the reason why I said someone dropped the ball.

While I sympathize with those who lost loved ones on Comair, my question is this: just how many "openings" have to be filmed to cover any eventuality that may occur before a show of this type is aired? And how would they segue from the pretaped part to the live show? What script would be used? I'm just turning the question around.

Hey, I like your username. Are you the original? ;-)

Anyway, I don't expect them to have multiple openings in the can. However, someone brought up an interesting question on Mike Gallagher's show this morning (Steve Malzberg was sitting in)... What would they (the show's producers) have done if a big-time Hollywood actor/producer/etc. was on that plane and died? And, no, Tom Cruise or Mel Gibson don't count.

I agree with you. This is a whole lot of whining about nothing. It was a skit to do with "Lost" not a skit about taking off on the wrong runway. I hate the networks too, but my anger is reserved for real issues like falsifying Texas Air Nation Guard records, or pushing "Commander and Chief" on us to get us use to a big government liberal who's also a woman (Hillary) being president, and many more, but a skit on "Lost" the same day a pilot takes off from the wrong runway? Please. Everybody is so sensitive.
