Pope Francis reaffirmed the Catholic Church's doctrine that women are not able to receive holy orders. The pontiff discussed the impossibility of female ordination in a Spanish-language book published in June, titled "El Pastor: Desafíos, razones y reflexiones sobre su pontificado" – or in English, "The Shepherd: Struggles, Reasons, and Thoughts on His Papacy,"

Today, it was announced that Cardinal Luis Ladaria Ferrer, former prefect of the Dicastery of the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF), will not be taking part in the Synod on Synodality 'at his own request.' No other reason was given. The peculiar timing, and absence of any explanation (other than that it was Ladaria's own request), are notable. Ladaria's last day as DDF prefect was September 8. He was replaced on September 11 with Francis loyalist Tucho Fernandez, who has been instructed by Francis to stay away from sex abuse investigations (despite it being a chief duty of his office)....

Pope Francis on July 9 named 21 new cardinals, including the Vatican's ambassador to the U.S., Archbishop Christophe Pierre; American-born Archbishop Robert Prevost, who oversees the appointments of Catholic bishops worldwide; and the new head of the Vatican's doctrinal office, Archbishop Victor Manuel Fernández. The pope made the announcement at the end of his weekly Sunday Angelus prayer from a window in the Apostolic Palace overlooking St. Peter's Square. Francis said he would install the new cardinals during a consistory at the Vatican on Sept. 30, saying these new cardinals represent the universality of the global church and the "inseparable...

It’s clear that some sort of shakeup to Rome’s diocesan governing apparatus had been coming, but both the specific form the Apostolic Constitution In Ecclesiarum communione took, and the optics created by its promulgation, are terrible.

Highway 402 traffic cameras showed transport trucks backed up beyond Airport Road in Sarnia at about noon Tuesday on the highway’s westbound lanes approaching the Blue Water Bridge. Transport trucks were backed up to Mandaumin Road and Sarnia’s city limits on Highway 402’s westbound lanes Tuesday afternoon while provincial police advised drivers to find different routes into the city. The roughly 20-kilometre logjam on the highway leading to the Blue Water Bridge came even after the Ambassador Bridge border crossing between Windsor and Detroit had reopened to U.S.-bound traffic after an anti-vaccine mandate demonstration had blocked both directions on Monday...

Protesters began blocking traffic entering Canada across the Ambassador Bridge linking Windsor, Ont., to Detroit as the Monday evening rush began. The demonstrators are waving Canadian flags and have slogans on their vehicles demanding an end to COVID-19 vaccine mandates. Similar scenes played out across Canada this past weekend as convoys of vehicles blocked city streets and highways. The Ambassador Bridge is one of the busiest international land border crossings in Canada and...

Devotion to sacred Scripture, a “living and tender love” for the written word of God: this is the legacy that Saint Jerome bequeathed to the Church by his life and labours. Now, on the sixteen hundredth anniversary of his death, those words taken from the opening prayer of his liturgical Memorial[1] give us an essential insight into this outstanding figure in the Church’s history and his immense love for Christ. That “living and tender love” flowed, like a great river feeding countless streams, into his tireless activity as a scholar, translator and exegete. Jerome’s profound knowledge of the Scriptures, his...

In a statement released by OSU, president Ed Ray said the universities agreed to drop the name as it has a connection to a war fought to preserve slavery. ............ (N)umerous athletes, alums and boosters have questioned the term...

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Francis has signed a decree recognizing a miracle attributed to the intercession of Blessed John Henry Newman, the English cardinal, clearing the way for his canonization. The Vatican announced Feb. 13 that Pope Francis had signed the decree the day before. Also Feb. 12, he formally recognized that the late Hungarian Cardinal Jozsef Mindszenty, jailed and exiled by the communists, had lived the Christian virtues in a heroic way; the recognition is an early step in the sainthood process. In the sainthood cause of Blessed Newman, Bishop Philip Egan of Portsmouth had reported in November...

After the news of the sexual abuse issue within the diocese has been made public, A Pennsylvania grand jury report on clergy sexual abuse faults Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the former longtime bishop of Pittsburgh, over his handling of abusive priests. This does not deserve to have a prestigous school named after him. This will directly impact students currently enrolled in the school, but will also impact the legacy of the school. Not to mention, those that were hurt while he looked away.

A Scarborough woman swore allegiance to ISIS in a Scarborough courtroom where she appeared to face allegations that she swung a golf club at hardware store employees while screaming threats and Islamic chants. Before Tuesday’s proceedings started, Justice of the Peace Alice Napier asked Rehab Dughmosh, 32, to identify herself in court — but the accused woman didn’t initially answer the question. “ISIS — I pledge to the leader of the believers — Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi,” blurted the woman through an interpreter. Al-Baghdadi is the leader of the Sunni militant jihadist group known as the Islamic State of Iraq (ISIS)...

A newly constructed bridge in northern Ontario has heaved apart, indefinitely closing the Trans-Canada highway — the only road connecting Eastern and Western Canada. The Nipigon River Bridge has been closed for "an indefinite time due to mechanical issues," according to the Ontario Provincial Police. The bridge remains open to pedestrian traffic. The west side of the bridge has pulled away from the abutment connecting it to the river bank's edge, lifting up about 60 centimetres. As a result, police have shut down Highways 11 and 17 at the bridge, which is located about 100 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay,...
