After the news of the sexual abuse issue within the diocese has been made public, A Pennsylvania grand jury report on clergy sexual abuse faults Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the former longtime bishop of Pittsburgh, over his handling of abusive priests. This does not deserve to have a prestigous school named after him. This will directly impact students currently enrolled in the school, but will also impact the legacy of the school. Not to mention, those that were hurt while he looked away.
Would you consider giving this a ping? It would have been more up NYers alley.
Local news showed somebody spray painted red over Wuerl’s name on the road sign.
I’d be glad to help.
It's OK though, the Church will shell out a few hundred mil $$, maybe a billion, and make it up from the collection plate.
They've got plenty of parishioners.
I like this situation. I give a million to the church and they pay off victims with the money because they can’t deal with predator priests. How can anyone donate to the catholic church?
What, you don't enjoy paying off the victims of homosexual pedophiles? What's wrong with you?
It's not like there's any poor people in need.
My wife went to Archbishop Ryan in Philadelphia (Go Rag Dolls!) and hopefully he wasn’t accused of anything.
There are plenty of good Catholic charities out there. I would be really Leary of donating to a diocese (or any place that you don’t know well) until this mess settles.

Agreed. But I wonder - if you donate to one of those charities, does a portion of your money automatically go to the local bishop or to Rome? Because that would be a deal-breaker for me.
the money the church pays is like displacement. They have to find and redirect funds to pay hundreds of millions in settlements. There are plenty of great charities outside the catholic church. That’s where my money goes. i have an aversion to the word catholic till the top of the church down through bishop meets their responsibility.
No. I work for a private Catholic College, and we are an independent corporation that has no financial ties to the rest of the Church (other than paying rent for use of some local parish facilities). There are many such independent entities.
If you can find groups within the Church that are fighting the good fight and are financially isolated from the rest of the Church—look for a small order or an independent apostolate—you can help the good guys.
Thank you for the quick reply. But how can you tell if a Catholic charity is an independent entity, one that keeps all donation money local?
For example, a friend says that the local St Vincent de Paul thrift store does good work. I’m thinking of adding them to my donation list. But I will not give anything to them if even a penny goes to Rome.
(No offense meant.)
Ask them if they are an independent registered charity. And ask them if they ever give anything to Rome or to the local diocese. In the present climate I think that the question is understandable.
I signed it.
They church is rotting and the head is rotting faster than the body. As I said, I have better places to spend my money. The name catholic church currently repulses me. i wish you well, nevertheless.
