  • Will Cheney stay on as VP?

I agree; I don't see much positive press out there for Cheney, especially since his heroism on 9/11 was so clear. He's much more experienced than Edwards, and his toughness will be an asset.

  • HAS FEMINISM MADE GOOD ON ITS OWN PROMISES?

Again, this is just a distraction! Radical feminism was an overreaction to some things in society that weren't fair. Like a lot of social movements, it promised more than it could deliver.

But the notion that radical feminism "paved the way" for equality b/w men and women is ridiculous! In many communities, men and women were already equal. I'm glad women have more opportunities now than they did, but of course it doesn't solve the problem of how to parent children. Children need parents (mother and father) so everyone can't have the same level of a career at the same time.

That said, many women are no more swayed by a cute candidate pushing a certain political agenda than men are swayed by a cute woman pushing a certain brand of beer! We all can be swayed by a pretty package, and we all can remember: buyer beware!

  • Feminizing the Nation's Boys

Oh come on, my girls love to take things apart and my boys know how to respect their elders and their sisters. I think people just need to leave kids alone and let them be themselves, and not worry about making natural human aggression something forbidden or just for boys or girls.

All my kids/nieces/nephews have the same rules: don't hit your littler sibling (and they all break this rule equally!), be clean (and they all break this rule equally too!), stand up for yourself (when a boy on the playground lifted my little girl's skirt, you can bet he was sorry, to the tune of a black eye) and be kind. Yes, I'm probably a little harder on the boys about fighting because I think it's easy to please your friends and be a bully, and I'm harder on the girls about teasing because it's easy to please your friends and be nasty. Thank goodness sex hasn't really come up yet, but my advice for all of them will be the same: wait until marriage!

I want all my kids to be strong and smart and good people, fulfilling God's wishes for them!

I wish he hadn't said it, but I do think the media could spend time on other things! We're all adults here, it's not like he said it to little kids, he said it to a grown man in response to being provoked!

  • Karina: Am I Conservative, Rush?

There are some solid points made in this thread; I used to be uncomfortable with Rush's style, but I thought he showed himself to be honest and mature and had a lot of integrity when he had his medication problems. This call is an excellent example of using common ground to bring everyone closer. Someone mentioned the common misconception that Republicans are rich, I think things like the Pell grant AS AN ALTERNATIVE to traditional government handouts are an excellent rebuttal to that notion. It's what the compassion in compassionate conservatism is all about. The Conservative part is that you're expected to qualify by pursuing education, which specifically enables you to get a job. Once you have the education, no more money except what you earn.

Of course life isn't fair, and just because some people's parents can afford to pay for their school doesn't mean that the govenrment should step in for everyone. But since we live in a world where the government does intervene through social programs, and that's not likely to change, Limbaugh demonstrated that there's room for compassion without compromising the value of integrity to your beliefs and being accountable to yourself.

My conservatism is based on my Christianity, and how Jesus lived His life. He helped those who needed it, and as Rush said, Americans are compassionate and do help those who need it. Of course that doesn't mean that the government should do everything. But the fact that this woman, despite all the influences to the contrary, had her child and is raising her thoughtfully, makes me glad that she's getting some help from the government to become more self-sufficient. It may be controversial to some conservatives (and the above discussion illustrates it) but I do think it's both compassionate and conservative.

  • Lynne Cheney differs with VP on Gay Marriage

I think a lot of Republicans are not anti-gay personally (love the sinner, hate the sin). I also think I don't want people tinkering with the Constitution! I just don't see why the state needs to get involved with marriage period, it should be for religions to decide. The state should give everyone a civil union, and then each church could give or deny a religious ceremony as they please. Otherwise it just focuses people's attention to this one, relatively minor social issue, instead of larger issues of national security, budget, etc.

I don't love Rush, but IF it's true, and he talks about his addiction, I wouldn't think less of him. A lot of "normal" people get hooked on painkillers, they get an injury or something, and aren't as wary as they should be about becoming dependent, and then their judgment is affected. Addiction is not a sin, and IF that's his plight, I hope he gets the help and support he needs. Plus, he's not a politician, so if he has had lapses in judgment they haven't jeapardized the public trust, etc. He could become a role model for facing your burdens, and become a guiding light to others.

I agree! If they really wanted to counter the violent programming of their other Disney-owned properties (videogames, movies, etc.) they wouldn't make it so darned hard to afford!

do you mean me? I am no fan of adultery but I do think that the Bible speaks the Truth about "he without sin casting the first stone" (here literally). I think stoning someone (especially a mother, whose adultery would have been hidden if she hadn't had the child) for having a baby or adultery is just plain wrong.

I agree that General Clark's service merits respect, if not support of his views.

I have been trying to find out more info on Clark, because he intrigues me. I haven't been able to find out much about his views, I have a friend who is very supportive of him and is a registered republican (though probably too moderate for these boards) so I am interested in any info about him.

I think that Clerk is a threat to Bush. Especially since we have worked so hard to get soldiers' votes counted, now that could backfire.

Bush still has the advantage of being a commander in chief, rather than a fired general. Does the military seem to support Clark?
