Former Secretary of State John Kerry raised the possibility that a victory by President Trump could provoke a revolution in the United States, claiming that Republicans have a history of denying voting rights to Democratic voters. “If people don't have adequate access to the ballot, I mean that's the stuff on which revolutions are built,” Kerry said during a virtual appearance at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit. “If you begin to deny people the capacity of your democracy to work, even the Founding Fathers wrote in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, we have an inherent right to challenge that. And...

enate Republicans said they are working on a comprehensive proposal to respond to racially motivated police misconduct and other reforms to the criminal justice system. Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, who is the only black Republican in the Senate, is leading the effort, GOP lawmakers said Tuesday. “I’ve asked Sen. Tim Scott to lead a group working on proposals to allow us to respond to the obvious racial discrimination on full display on our television screens the last two weeks and what is the appropriate response of the federal government,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said.

Former President George W. Bush on Wednesday broke his silence on the death of George Floyd, saying that he was “anguished” by the incident and calling “for America to examine our tragic failures” when it comes to racial injustice. “We have resisted the urge to speak out, because this is not the time for us to lecture,” Bush said in a statement. “It is time for us to listen. It is time for America to examine our tragic failures – and as we do, we will also see some of our redeeming strengths.”

Okay, but isn’t it possible that cosmetics matter? Certainly gun manufacturers act as if they do. They’ve designed guns to look more and more like weapons of war. They are advertised with images of heavily armored soldiers. Some gun ads use language exquisitely attuned to men’s desire for respect and even dominance. “Forces of opposition, bow down,” said one. The AR-15 Bushmaster was marketed with the slogan “Consider your man card reissued.”

"I'm looking to do background checks," he told reporters. "I think background checks are important. I don't want to put guns into the hands of mentally unstable people or people with rage or hate. Sick people. I'm all in favor of it." He indicated there would be little movement on legislation to ban high-powered weapons like the one used in Dayton, Ohio, on Sunday and other mass shootings. "You have to have a political appetite within Congress, and so far I haven’t seen that," Trump said.

Fully automatic guns are illegal, but the ban on semi-automatics (of the kind used in the Orlando shootings) and related ammunition expired in 2004. That restriction should be revived; nobody needs what many call an assault rifle to hunt game or shoot clay pigeons. At the least, the size of the magazines should be limited, which could lessen the carnage of mass shootings.
-
The Supreme Court has ruled that the Second Amendment protects the right to own “guns in common use.” That doesn’t cover the semiautomatic weapons regularly used only in mass shootings.

When asked by CBS's "Face the Nation" host if he supports returning to D.C. for a vote, Sen. Tim Scott (D-S.C.) said he'd "be happy to go back." "I'd leave tonight. I'll go tomorrow, it doesn't matter to me. This is such an important issue," Scott said.

President Trump said he is "seriously" considering pushing for a ban on suppressors for firearms in the aftermath of the mass shooting in Virginia Beach that left 12 people dead and six people injured. The shooter used two legally bought .45 caliber handguns, with a suppressor, in the attack. The shooter was shot and killed by police. "What is your view on silencers? Would you like to see those banned?" "Good Morning Britain's" Piers Morgan asked Trump. "I don't like them. Well, I'd like to think about it. I mean nobody's talked about silencers very much. I did talk about...
