Trump 'all in favor' of background checks but doubts will of Congress

"I'm looking to do background checks," he told reporters. "I think background checks are important. I don't want to put guns into the hands of mentally unstable people or people with rage or hate. Sick people. I'm all in favor of it."

He indicated there would be little movement on legislation to ban high-powered weapons like the one used in Dayton, Ohio, on Sunday and other mass shootings.

"You have to have a political appetite within Congress, and so far I haven’t seen that," Trump said.

President Trump is okay with background check legislation and seems to indicate he WOULD be okay with gun bans.

This is nothing new. He lived through some of the most crime-ridden days of New York City and in the 90s and 00s in interviews with Larry King and the like, voiced his support for certain (limited) gun control measures. Quotes are online and in a book he wrote called the “The America We Deserve” (published 2000 when he first thought about running for the presidency.)

He never said anything about gun bans, you are literally making stuff up because you want to be a “THE SKY IS FALLING” defeatist. Frankly, I am sick and tired of the defeatists and chicken littles who are supposed to be on “our side.” The left never quits, never gives up, and is always fighting. Our side caves, quivers, gives up and runs at the first hint of any fight, and we consistently listen to the media and let the media frame the narrative, despite the fact that they are propaganda machines for the left.

WHY?

Exactly. What else does he want...background checks on the existing background checks?

I don’t see the use in banning “high power” firearms when a low power firearm will kill you just as dead.

PDJT comes from a very leftist community...and showed signs of left-wing influence long before his inaguration.
This is why he wasn’t my first choice of candidates...(of course, I worked my tail off to get him elected after he secured the nomination!)

To his credit, he appears to want to do good things.. and he has done some good stuff and has at least tried to do much more good stuff (thrawted by the commies in the Congress and courts, alas!)

However, he still requires constant vigilence by all American citizens..(as do all public officials)....and the Second Amendment is one of his weak points, imho

Unless the person attempting to buy a firearm has been diagnosed by a competent medical authority, no background check will reveal their mental state. So how would a new law change that? Red Flag laws are unconstitutional and a danger to a civil society. They will turn neighbor against neighbor and we will end up with a society that mirrors 1930's Germany.

He said he doesn’t see an appetite for gun bans in congress. He did not come out and say he opposes them. Do you think if congress was okay with passing legislation like the 2004 ban that Trump would veto it?

We already have background checks.

If he’s talking about outlawing private sales, then he’s agreeing to gun registration.

“In his book The America We Deserve, published in 2000, Trump took a much more moderate position, criticizing Democrats who argue for total gun confiscation but also Republicans who “walk the NRA line”:

It’s often argued that the American murder rate is high because guns are more available here than in other countries. Democrats want to confiscate all guns, which is a dumb idea because only the law-abiding citizens would turn in their guns and the bad guys would be the only ones left armed. The Republicans walk the NRA line and refuse even limited restrictions.

He concluded: “I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun. With today’s internet technology we should be able to tell within 72 hours if a potential gun owner has a record.”

Trump is in favor of unconstitutional “Red Flag” laws. I can ask the same question:

WHY?

If he signs that, kiss 2020 goodbye, along with our rights.

This issue along with a couple of others were the side of Trump that concerned me. He's a bit of a lib on this issue and the homosexual issue.

When I voted for Trump it was for the Supreme Court and judges.

I'm hoping he doesn't lurch left on this or else we will lose everything in 2020. It won't matter what the economy is doing.

“Our side caves, quivers, gives up and runs at the first hint of any fight”

A ton of them here on FR to be sure. They are the same ones who at every instance of a “bombshell report” during the election screamed ,”it’s all over for Trump he can’t POSSIBLY win now”

How do we know that background checks weren't done on both the shooters from last weekend? And if they weren't, what in either man's background would have caused a background check to prevent them from purchasing their firearms? In both cases the guns were purchased legally.

It sounds to me like he’s asking for an end to private party sales. That’s a total non-starter and is defacto registration.

He will lose more than enough support to lose the 2020 election.

Outlawing private sales is the whole point of this exercise.

Combined with red flag laws.

That way the PTB’s will know exactly who has what so they can swat them and hopefully kill them under the guise of ‘taking guns from the crazy’.

If you don’t think every freeper is on a ‘list’, you haven’t been paying attention...
