(For educational and discussion purposes only) Along with the usual reminders to hold the noise down and pay overdue fines, library patrons in Santa Cruz are seeing a new type of sign these days: a warning that records of the books they borrow may wind up in the hands of federal agents. The signs, posted in the 10 county branches last week and on the library's Web site, also inform the reader that the USA Patriot Act "prohibits library workers from informing you if federal agents have obtained records about you." "Questions about this policy," patrons are told, "should be...

Gleaned from BOTW, one of the worlds most entertaining web sites, is this excerpt about campain finance reform in the beginnings of it's death throes: "John McCain, the Sisyphus of reform, is already declaring defeat: "We now find this reform law threatened by both political parties, the special interests who are regrouping, and also by the very regulatory body of the federal government charged with its interpretation."

Inspired by another thread about the Massachusetts state motto, I think it is time for Virginia to dump her duplicity. We have 2 mottos ("The Old Dominion" and "Mother of Presidents") which we should whittle down to one so visiting Floridians will not be confused. So how about it ? Let's have some suggestions. Winner will be announced whenever this thread dies.

Now that the Republicans are in back in power, as they should be, I would like my fellow Freepers' opinion on what is the most important thing to accomplish before 2002? My opinion is to confirm the Bush judicial appointments. This will have long lasting effects. What do you all think?

In the past week we political types have been through, seen, heard, and said a lot. After all, it was election week. But some things I have heard and seen convince me that some people should just not be able to vote. For example, Florida, which ought be thrown out of the union along with California, voted a constitutional amendment to protect the rights of pregnant pigs to turn about. How many pig farms are there in Florida? Two, to be exact, and one of those is closing.Take New Mexico for another glaring example of common sense at work. This year...

Minnesota man shot by his dog The Associated Press BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. - Pheasant season took an ugly turn for Michael Murray when he was shot by Sonny, his year-old English setter pup. The puppy knew something was very wrong when Murray dropped to the ground with blood spurting from his ankle. "Sonny just laid by my side," Murray said. "He knew something was bad." Murray, 42, was hunting in western South Dakota on the first day of the season last Saturday. He said he was lining up a photo of the seven birds his hunting party shot in the...

Susan Howard Wins 2001 Sybil Ludington Women's Freedom AwardApril 26, 1777: A wounded messenger barely reaches the home of New York militia officer Henry Ludington with desperate news of a British attack on nearby Danbury, Connecticut. With no time to spare, Colonel Ludington enlists the help of his 16-year old daughter, Sybil. While her father organizes the local militia, Sybil rides through the night on horseback to alert the troops in the surrounding countryside. By risking her life, Sybil makes a profound difference in America's successful pursuit to become a free and independent nation. It is in this spirit of...

It has come to my attention that since the DU has decided to crack down on free speech, we at FR have experienced a large increase in democratic posts. Not that I mind it. In fact, the entertainment value of the site has gone up (I thought it not possible). Consider the following examples, taken just this morning:While discussing the merits of a sniper defying (snip this) t shirt, I read the following comment: I understand the sentiment, but it might be considered offensive. A target or crosshairs makes me queasy, but you could probably get away with "We Refuse...

Background: For those of you who don't know, there is a program called Tuition Assistance in which the navy pays for 75% of college tuition for active duty personnel. This program has been around for a long time and greatly assists personnel in the transition to civilian life after serving their country honorably and in good conscience. Announcement: To my fellow sailors, remember when the rumours were going around that tuition assistance was going to increase to 100%? Well, it just did, but it is not the good deal that you think it is. The 100% only covers 12 hours...

I would like to start a continuing thread of funny headlines of the day. Feel free to put your 2 cents here. The one I would like to post is this one, taken from the 17 Oct Washington Times (internet ed): "Looks of spy plane are deceiving"

Couch potatoes Leaders of the National Education Association had better switch off their television sets and start studying Reality 101. Last week, after viewing NBC's prime-time show "The West Wing," the national educators took the incredible step of issuing a news release headlined: "NEA backs President Bartlet's call for school quality. Wednesday's 'The West Wing' featured President Bartlet's plea for more teachers and better-funded public schools. NEA strongly agrees." Reaction on Capitol Hill? Republicans, if nobody else, are "shaking their heads," says David Schnittger, communications director for the House Education and the Workforce Committee. "What's interesting is the NEA doesn't...

Hampton Roads, Don't be Deceived Recently in the mail I received a flyer from the Yes Campaign, espousing the virtues of the proposed sales tax increase to fund traffic problem fixes in the Hampton Roads area. This flyer was a very well put together deception. I choose the word deception because when I consider the way they presented their points, I had no other word to put to it. Simply stated, every one of their pretty little points was either a mis-statement or a flat out untruth. Consider the following: One of the points stated that in order for a...
