Your Opinion Wanted: What's the most important issue (Vanity)

Posted on 11/08/2002 6:02:40 AM PST by BSunday

Now that the Republicans are in back in power, as they should be, I would like my fellow Freepers' opinion on what is the most important thing to accomplish before 2002? My opinion is to confirm the Bush judicial appointments. This will have long lasting effects. What do you all think?

Homeland Security Department. Without a secure homeland, we'll end up with Taliban judges in short order.

I think we need reform of the Endangered Species Act.

The Endangered Species Act has pretty much paralyzed the West Coast. Everything is an Environmental matter and gets tied up in court for years.

Getting any public works project done involves setting aside three times the amount of money you think it will cost you because of court proceedings.

One project to redo some freeway ramps over here in Seattle went over budget by 300% even after inflating the estimate on the project.

Also, the law constantly causes takings from private land owners without reimbursement.

Only bad thing, is if the law changes the house values will crash because the prices on houses are artificially inflated because it is so expensive to do new construction.

Oh, buy government says we need cheap government housing because of it, I love the liberal logic.

Hey how come your vanity is more important than his vanity? I think this vanity is much more valid than trying to asking how we can sway Trent Lott's viewpoint

BSunday, I think the most important issue is to hold the conservative party to a more Constitutional stance. Instead of looking to what they may do for us, get out letters and calls to our Congressmen, the President, and any others involved in policy making to take some of the bureaucracy away. Instead of rallying behind initiatives like drug prescription plans and intrusive 'homeland security' that 10 years from now could be used against conservatives, push for our leaders to let some of the power go and give it back to the states and the people of those respective states

o The appointment of conservative federal judges.

o Nonunion workers manning a Department of Homeland Security.

o A total rewrite or complete elimination of the tax code to be replaced by a national sales tax

o A patients' bill of rights with a cap on lawsuits.

o A tax cut carved in granite.

o Oil drilling rigs heading for the Alaskan Wildlife Preserve.

o A ban on late term abortions.

That's a hard question because there's a lot of important things on the plate. Here's a weasely list because prioritizing is not strictly necessary with 51 votes in the Senate. =)

Taxes are too high. Until we get a meaningful and permanent tax cut for EVERYONE who pays taxes, not much else the government does matters to me.

Cutting taxes
Securing our borders from rampant illegal immigration
Cutting the size of government (like THAT is going to happen)

I think we need reform of the Endangered Species Act.

Actually we need to go one step deeper, and get rid of the New Deal Commerce Clause. That's where they get their authority to enact the ESA, and a boatload of other stuff.

If we go by what some would call "discrete" or "isolated" issues, getting Constitution-respecting jurists onto the federal bench -- judges who would insist on adhering to the letter of the Constitution, rather than abide any "evolving document" nonsense -- would be tops with me. But that's because it's part and parcel of a larger and more urgent task: Restoring the Constitution, restoring Republican fidelity to the Constitution, and assuring the public that, if the Constitution matters to you, then the GOP is the only game in town.

If I believed the GOP really was determined to restore Constitutional government in all particulars, I'd be a Republican true-blue. As matters stand, I can only hope. They've been "Democrats on a budget" for too long to execute a 180-degree turn immediately, of course, but I want to see some indications of renewed fidelity and determination to roll back the tide before I return to that fold.

Moreover, we need some sort of credible alternative to keep the GOP properly faithful to Constitutional constraint. The minor parties (e.g., Constitution, Libertarian) provide some incentive, but not nearly enough, owing to the special privileges the major parties have that are now written into law. A "None Of The Above Is Acceptable" provision on all ballots would help greatly, as would a requirement that all bills considered by Congress must provide the Constitutional authorization for their enactments on the first page: article, section, and clause.

I agree. President Bush just better get off his duff and start getting his agenda passed; i.e. homeland security, tax cuts, partial birth abortion, etc.

He needs to start NOW and not wait around. We won, now let's not sit on these issues....let's just get 'em passed.
