April 1980:
Operation Eagle Claw was a failed U.S. military mission launched on April 24, 1980, to rescue 52 American hostages held in Tehran. The complex, joint operation was aborted at a remote staging site ("Desert One") in Iran due to helicopter failures and poor weather. During withdrawal, a helicopter-transport plane collision killed eight U.S. service members.
