David Pietrusza, author of "1920: The Year of the Six Presidents," profiles America's 30th President, Calvin Coolidge, in his book "Silent Cal's Almanack: The Homespun Wisdom of Vermont's Calvin Coolidge." "Silent Cal's Almanack" features a collection of President Coolidge's speeches, examples of his political thinking, and photos, editorial cartoons and campaign memorabilia that spanned his political career. Mr. Pietrusza spoke at the William K. Sanford Library in Loudonville, New York.

This is a TV-headsup...set your DVRs for midnight EASTERN 8-4-08... (that's when Sunday turns into Monday!). I watched the first airing of this long interview (approx. 3 hours) of Col. Ralph Peters (US Army, ret.) at 11AM Eastern today. I recommend it for anyone interested in The War on Terror, military intelligence, history, politics, the US military and the craft of writing. This is a "headsup" for a couple of books being covered on BookTV (C-Span2 weekends). I'd say these two books fall in the general category of "fighting the savages". The Night Stalkers is written by Michael Durant, the downed helicopter pilot held captive by Aideed during the "Blackhawk Done" incident. The "Becoming Charlemange..." book sounds like it might be an interesting coverage on how Europe was stictched together.

This is a "headsup" for selected reviews/presentations about WWII and the Cold War that will appear on BookTV (C-Span2) this weekend of Jan. 13/14, 2007. Links to the segments of specific reviews (and their broadcast times) will be posted below. The "Ship of Ghosts: The Story of the USS Houston..." might be pretty good. This is a "headsup" for reviews of interviews on selected Civil-era War books on BookTV this weekend. (links to summaries of presentations will be posted in post 2). The "Generals In Bronze" segment is a rebroadcast. I saw an earlier airing. It is about a sculptor that got many Union Army generals to "dish" wartime details they'd never disclose to the public. If a more sensational editor had produced the book, it could easily be subtitled "Union General Confidential". I haven't seen the other two presentations, so I can't speak about the books or authors.
