My best friend and great girl dog is off to a better place. This sweet rescue lab mix was struck with a very aggressive Lymphoma. Her suffering was mercifully short and we saw her off this afternoon. She was diagnosed last Friday and we had the weekend to be with her and enjoy her company. She was really my wife's dog at heart. When we went to pick a rescue she immediately ran to my wife and wouldn't leave her side the whole time we looked over the dogs so of course she came home with us. She truly loved...

Thinking of adopting another rescue, still grieving over the loss of my rescue of 12 years, she died in 1/21. She was a 45 lb. bundle of joy(hound, lab, pit mix) never barked. I still miss her, but maybe it's time to renew.

Found her(hound mix) in a rescue shelter 12 years ago. She was appx. 2 years old by the vet when we got her. So she is appx. 14 years old.

An English boy with limited mobility formed a special bond with a three-legged dog nobody else wanted, and now their story is becoming a book. Owen Howkins, 7, suffers from Schwartz-Jampel syndrome, a rare genetic condition that leaves his muscles in a permanent state of tension. Owen's mother learned about Haatchi online. The Italian shepherd had been tied to a railroad track where he was hit, and his tail and one leg had to be amputated. Owen's family adopted the dog, and Haatchi and Owen formed a bond straight away.

Several weeks ago, my 14-year-old lab/chow mix, Wally, began making loud coughing/choking noises every half hour or so, for no readily apparent reason. The second day of his doing this, we took him in to the vet, and -- after x-rays and ultrasound -- he was diagnosed with DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy). What this means is that Wally's heart had enlarged to the point where it now presses (with increasing frequency) against his esophagus, making it steadily more difficult for him to breathe. (Hence, the bouts of choking/coughing). The vet prescribed various medicines for Wally -- Tussigon (cough suppressant); Furosemide (diuretic);...

A Waterloo man and his dog made a harrowing escape from the clutches of a vicious black bear Thursday while portaging near Wawa, Ont. Tom Tilley, 55, killed the nearly 200-pound bear by jumping on its back and stabbing the aggressive animal with a six-inch hunting knife after his dog alerted him and distracted the bear. "Love is a very powerful emotion and my thought right away was, 'You're not going to kill my dog,' " Tilley said yesterday. "I really consider my dog a hero. Without that first warning I would have had the bear clamping down on my...

Veterans of three combat tours together, two U.S. Marines ran out of luck when they approached a suspicious-looking man outside an Iraqi police-recruitment center in Ramadi in January. Marine dog handler Sgt. Adam Cann sensed trouble when Bruno, his bomb-sniffing canine partner, became agitated, signaling the proximity of explosives. In a flash, the suspect detonated the pounds of explosives he'd hidden in his suicide-bomb vest, leaving dozens of dead and injured all around. Cann, 23, fell fatally wounded as he tried to shield his German shepherd from harm. In the aftermath of the blast, Bruno, his fur bloodied by his...

"As many of you are aware, I had been anxiously awaiting the addition of a new baby to my life. The baby has been born and both mother and child are in good health. Since the birth, however, we have discovered that biologically, the child is not mine. As excited as I was about becoming a new father, my disappointment is equally as strong. So out of respect for all that are involved, please allow this situation to remain private and know that I will not be commenting further on this very personal matter. I'm thanking you in advance for...

Max is our dog. He is a cream-colored miniature poodle, one of a breed that is believed to be high on the canine intelligence scale. We consider ourselves fairly intelligent, too, so we often enhance our efforts at communicating with Max. At times it appears that Max is trying hard to communicate with us as well. This occurs mostly when there is something specific he wants but his human housemates are just not comprehending his request. The scenario goes something like this: Max approaches one of us, stares us straight in the eye, and waits. We usually begin with the...

President Bush is leading with moral clarity in the fight against terror around the world. His leadership is exhibted by concrete actions, often making bold changes to U.S. policy in favor of Israel. President Bush, like no U.S. president before, has acknowledged Israel's right to certain West Bank settlements, completely changed U.S. treatment of Yasser Arafat, and no longer uses the moral equivalency language, "cycle of violence." In contrast, Senator Kerry, while voting safely with the pro-Israel majority, shows no leadership and poor judgment. He makes troubling and often conflicting statements about the security fence (a "barrier to peace"), Yassir...

About five years ago my husband and I heard about this “loser” dog. Loser because he was a Pitbull/Amstaff that wouldn’t fight! We had two rescues at this time, a Rottie and an Amstaff, so we weren’t looking for another dog, but something made us call these people to find out about Norton. The owner said thanks but they’d already found a home for him. Two days later we got a call from this person saying Norton had been returned and asking if we’d like to come and see him. We loaded our dogs into the car and told ourselves...

I've had my SPCA mutt, Peppi, for about 2 1/2 years now. The amount of knowledge he has accumulated in just the past 6 months absolutely amazes me. Cars come and go all the time. People walk up and down the street. He knows who is who. He used to be indiscriminate in his reactions. Not anymore. He now has everyone sorted out. If a neighbor pulls up in their car, he doesn't move an inch. If a UPS truck pulls up, he goes nuts. If the postman walks down the other side of the street, even while the TV...

<p>Gary Thrapp has studied countless diamonds in his 30-year career, but he never has seen one like this.</p>
<p>"It looks flawless," says the Indianapolis jeweler.</p>
<p>What he has in front of his jeweler's loupe is not the product of millions of years of nature, but a couple of hours in a laboratory.</p>

Israel's best friend in the White House By JONATHAN ROSENBLUM Who says there are no miracles today? President George W. Bush's long-awaited speech on the Middle East, in which he upset the applecart of cherished assumptions on which Middle East diplomacy has been based for more than a decade, certainly qualifies. At least if you believe the pundits, not one of whom came close to predicting what the president would say. If a speech can be judged by those it ticks off, then Bush's was a smasheroo. Foreign Minister Shimon Peres was reportedly so revolted that he could not bear...
