No elephants, no lions, no tigers, no horses, not even a dog act. NO CLOWNS! Great acrobatic performances and lots and lots of very loud, very bad music (25% of the entire show).

Marine 1st Lt. Harvey “Barney” Barnum jumped to the ground when he came under fire during an ambush in Vietnam that killed his radio operator and commander. Collecting himself, Barnum realized he was now the highest-ranking officer of a rifle company he’d just joined. He called in artillery and, amid gunfire, dragged the commander to safety, where he died in Barnum’s arms. Then he proceeded to mount a counterattack, oversee evacuation of the wounded and lead the unit’s eventual break out to rejoin the battalion. To launch a counterattack, he brandished a .45-caliber handgun and told the others to follow...

He called himself the "Prince of Humbugs." Today, most people remember him for his circus and for a cynical remark ("There's a sucker born every minute") that in fact he never made. It is less well known that P. T. Barnum (1 8 10-91) first made his mark as the proprietor of the American Museum in New York City. There, from 1841 to 1868, he combined freak shows and serious scientific exhibits, entertainment and edification, to produce "rational" amusement for a remarkably diverse audience. Recreating this chapter in the great showman's life, biographer A. H. Saxon describes Barnum's role in...

BRIDGEPORT — Every day was April Fools' Day for P.T. Barnum, the renowned showman and self-proclaimed Prince of Humbugs, a title that leads to questions about the authenticity of the artifacts he left behind. After all, the Bridgeport Renaissance man gave the world the Fejee Mermaid, a fantasy creature that was one of his biggest hoaxes. But leave it to Barnum to play with people's minds, even from beyond the grave. Just as one starts to believe everything in Barnum's collection sprang from his creative genius, along come a couple of archaeological experts to authenticate Pa-Ib, an Egyptian mummy reputed...

March 30, 2004, 5:06 PM EST ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- While Donald Trump basks in the popularity of his runaway hit reality TV show, "The Apprentice," the auditors for his Atlantic City casinos are raising alarms over their real-life debt. Barring a bailout, Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts may not be able to continue as a "going concern," auditors for Ernst & Young LLP warned in a letter to the company's board of directors. The debt-laden company, which runs three Atlantic City casinos, is struggling under stiff competition, recurring operating losses and what had a working capital deficit as of...

The Spacefaring Web 3.01 by John Carter McKnightScottsdale - Jan 15, 2003Space tourism could be huge - if marketed right. Sound engineering is essential, but the key to success is showmanship. Space tourism needs to be everything the blue-suited government space program never was - brash, fun, tacky, masterfully hyped and undeniably popular. NASA's given us the equivalent of public-access zoning hearings on TV; it's time for Survivor, or The Osbournes, or Sex In The City. It's time for The Greatest Show Off Earth. P. T. Barnum, founder of The Greatest Show On Earth®, now known as Ringling Bros. and...
