Albert Drexel, in Ein Neuer Prophet? (Stein am Rhein: Christiana, 1971) explains that: "The modernism or neo-modernism within Christianity, and especially within the Roman Catholic Church after the Second Vatican Council, is above all characterized by a turning away from the supernatural and an exclusive predilection for this world, the Aggiornamento of Pope John XXIII interpreted one-sidedly and hence misapplied. Teilhard's ideology was was a definitive precondition for this. Inasmuch as he turned his back to the past, fused God and the supernatural with the process of a universal evolutionism, and proclaimed religion to be an active participation in a...

LAS CUMARAGUAS, Venezuela - In this dusty town of potholed roads on the Caribbean coast, people are fascinated with the revolutionary changes that President Hugo Chavez talks about constantly on television. But nine years after he was elected, many here say their lives are virtually the same. There are still few jobs. Running water comes only two days a week at best. Paint peels from the walls of the public school, where teachers say they badly need more books. The state is building three dozen concrete homes here, but construction has dragged on while some residents are living in quarters...

SACRAMENTO (AP) - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's budget proposal for education will call for a second year of shorting schools the money they're owed under Proposition 98 - the voter-approved funding guarantee for public schools, the state's top education official said Thursday. "Prop. 98 is being gutted," said Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell, who was briefed on the budget proposal on Wednesday. "We simply cannot afford to take more money out of classrooms and this budget would raid money from classrooms." The governor's proposal, laid out in part during his state of the state address Wednesday, calls for a constitutional...

NILES -- Sometime today, the Niles Police Department expects to announce whether the man found in the St. Joseph River on Monday in the Renault LeCar was Thomas Burns, a 28-year-old Stevensville man, who had been missing since March 1989. If it is Burns, then the department will tap into a 3-inch-thick file filled with statements from individuals about what happened the night Burns disappeared. "And if those statements don't match up, we will certainly take a second look at those individuals," Capt. James Merriman said Tuesday. Merriman indicated police are far from determining if the man found in the...
