Anxious to spur an economic recovery without risking lives, President Donald Trump on Sunday insisted that “you can satisfy both” — see states gradually lift lockdowns while also protecting people from the coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 60,000 Americans. The president, fielding questions from Americans in a virtual town hall from the Lincoln Memorial, acknowledged valid fears on both sides of the issue. Some people are worried about getting sick; others are reeling from lost jobs and livelihoods. But while Trump increased his projection for the total U.S. death total to 80,000 or 90,000 — up by more...

It is rare that this site has to offer assistance to the Associated Press, but this is one such occasion. In November, 2012 the AP posted a story exposing the miserable failure that passes for a healthcare delivery system in Venezuela. The truth seeped into the AP’s website and archives but has since disappeared. This is where we can be of help. Thanks to the ever vigilant Wayback Machine the truth as originally posted by the AP lives on. The news organization’s story starts by following the misery of a 37 year old woman who has a huge cancerous tumor...

The apologists for this administration in the press corps responded predictably enough as one scandal after another was unfolding in Washington: They went after those who revealed the scandals, not those who perpetrated them. Benghazi? All those cover stories, one after the other, for weeks? Why, the White House was just patching together the usual talking points from all agencies concerned. Happens all the time. Move on, folks, there's nothing to see here. The whistle-blowers in the diplomatic corps? Their testimony was powerful but, in Hillary Clinton's words, "what difference, at this point, does it make?" To quote Jay...

Google and The Associated Press have agreed to a new deal after years of wrangling over alleged misuse of AP's content. As part of the pact, Google has said it will help AP better understand how its content is being used across the Web and what stories are gaining widest distribution. The deal could help AP modify its story selection based on what's popular. "AP and Google will work together in a number of new areas, such as ways to improve discovery and distribution of news," the news organization said ..... News Corp. The Associated Press said Thursday its net income plunged as revenue fell nearly 10 percent last year. The news cooperative also expects a decline in revenue this year, which would be its first back-to-back drop since the Great Depression. The AP released its 2009 financial results at the not-for-profit organization's annual meeting in New York. AP executives used the forum to explain some of the ways they hope to boost revenue for the organization and its members, such as with news applications for the iPad. Net income decreased 65 percent to $8.8 million in 2009 from $25.1 million a year...

The 'Creative' Technology Behind The AP's News Registry from the magic-beans dept The Associated Press' attempt to DRM the news is a bad idea for a variety of reasons, but its claims for the news registry's capabilities seem pretty misguided, once you examine the technology behind it (the "magic DRM beans"). Ed Felten dug into the details of the registry's microformat, hNews, which the AP announced a few weeks earlier, and here's where it gets really interesting: the hNews rights field is based on the Creative Commons Rights Expression Language (ccREL). If the AP thinks it'll be able to build...

I have read 2 "stories" from "A Professional News Organization Zone" and combined the "news" contained in them ("news" is "news" and, unlike "music" or "lyrics", cannot be "owned" by any "news" organization, even really big one like APNOze) without explicitly quoting the "stories". If there are things in this news account that APNOze thinks are different from their version of the news, they are welcome to provide correction to this story or their own account of same news. Here's a basic digest of what happened: A Washington watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics requested House Ethics Committee to...

Talk about striking for pure emotion with headlines! The AP has proclaimed that an "Israeli Strike Kills 13 Near Mourners". But, what does "near mourners" mean? Did Israel strike a funeral procession or not. Apparently NOT. AP begins their report giving the reader the feeling that Israel attacked a funeral procession with the following: "Mourners in a funeral procession for Israeli airstrike victims scattered in panic Tuesday as warplanes again unleashed missiles that hit buildings and killed 13 people, witnesses and officials said." Yet their very next paragraph proves that the strike was not only NOT upon that funeral procession,...
