Editor: Democrats Prevailing I see that our Lt. Gov. Amy Tuck is getting fed up with our Bush-like Haley Barbour because of differences in their views on how to spend our taxes. First, she should have known that being a lobbyist for the big tobacco companies, that Barbour would do anything he can that would be beneficial to them, but Amy Tuck, being peeved off at Barbour, said she is going back to the Democratic Party which made me very angry. I wonder where she gets the audacity to think the Democratic Party would even want to have her back....

During 2003 the seemingly constant journalistic scandals at the New York Times caused reporters and editors who were busy corrupting the news at less notorious outlets to be overlooked. In addition to the Jayson Blair scandal, there were the newspaper of record's l'affaires Rick Bragg, Lynette Holloway and Maureen Dowd; the resuscitation of the Sally Hemings Hoax; the matter of the non-existent terrorist attack in Iraq reported by "Pfc. Jose Belen"; the newspaper's postmortem castration of photographer Marvin Smith; its premature burial of dancer Katharine Sergava; and editorialist and Jefferson-hoaxer Brent Staples' baseless smear, claiming that Strom Thurmond had raped...

Hopefuls mince words when asked for positive words about each other At their first and only debate before next week's election, Republican Lt. Gov Amy Tuck and Democratic challenger Barbara Blackmon sniped at each other Thursday night on civil justice reform, abortion, economic development and other issues. Blackmon said Tuck "never had an original idea. She never could stand for anything." When Blackmon promoted her job plan, Tuck said, "It's amazing she has a plan. She has been in the Senate for 12 years. She never had a plan." When prompted by the moderator, the two were hard-pressed to say...

Press release agrees to affidavit challenge, strikes back at Blackmon 'innuendo' Lt. Gov. Amy Tuck on Thursday said she will sign an affidavit that she's never had an abortion. Tuck, a Republican, also blasted her Democratic opponent, state Sen. Barbara Blackmon, for her "personal attacks and innuendo" that Tuck has had an abortion. Blackmon on Monday proposed that she and Tuck each take an oath they had not had an abortion. "The answer to Barbara's question is that I can sign an affidavit affirming that I have never had an abortion," Tuck said in a news release Thursday. Campaign manager...

Lt. Gov. Amy Tuck met with President Bush on Tuesday in what Mississippi Republican leaders say was a chance for the president to endorse Tuck's re-election. At the White House, Bush welcomed Tuck and a group of Mississippi lawmakers who recently switched to the Republican Party, said White House spokesman Taylor Gross. "This primary event was to honor Lt. Gov. Amy Tuck. That's what it was all about,'' said state GOP chairman Jim Herring, who also attended the meeting. "The president invited Tuck to come up and voice his strong support for her and give her a briefing on various...

Two years ago, Lt. Gov. Amy Tuck said her opinion on whether Mississippi should keep or discard the state flag's Confederate battle emblem was a private one.

But now, as she heads into what could be a challenging re-election bid, she's more revealing on where she stood on an issue that tested politicians, riled both black and white residents and mobilized conservatives.

Rep. John Read of Gautier, a Democrat since first winning election in 1992, has qualified to run as a Republican. He will be seeking a fourth term. Read is the fifth lawmaker to switch to the GOP since December, when Lt. Gov. Amy Tuck left the Democrats. Read said he changed parties to better represent his Jackson County district, which is overwhelmingly Republican. He said the decision won't affect the way he votes in the House. "I've always been a conservative," he said. "A lot of people have always assumed that I was a Republican." There are now 82 Democrats,...

Fate of party switchers By BILL MINOR Eyes on Mississippi JACKSON—In neighboring Louisiana, political pundits are calling the unique run-off U.S. Senate race the "Second Louisiana Purchase" because of the tons of Republican money shipped in to unseat Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu. Every GOP bigwig from President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney on down has come down to fill the coffers for Republican contender Suzanne Haik Terrell who had come in second, far behind Landrieu in Louisiana’s "Open Primary" election Nov. 5, and forced the runoff. Is Louisiana’s experience but a preview of what we will see next year...
