One of the high ironies of the last several months was the brief news flash that the Rev. Al Sharpton is a distant cousin of the late and unlamented Senator Strom Thurmond, formerly of South Carolina. Even Al Sharpton seemed to be struck dumb by the news, at least for a long minute.  It reminded everybody that Southern Blacks and Whites are often cousins. New York Sen. Hillary Clinton condemned Trent Lott late Wednesday, telling reporters that she could never vote for him to continue on as Senate majority leader after hearing his remarks about Strom Thurmond. No doubt Lott is in a pile of trouble. But at least he didn't deliver his offending statement while adopting "a mock African-American accent," the way Hillary did - according to the Los Angeles Times - while addressing a group of supporters in Washington, D.C., a few years back.
