The nation became hooked on American Idol when it made its debut on Fox in 2002. The singing competition featured an array of talented entertainers ... as well as a few contestants who definitely could've used some voice lessons. Either way, we fell in love with the winners, from Kelly Clarkson, to Fantasia Barrino, to Carrie Underwood. Even a few of the runner-ups won us over, as well (hello, Clay Aiken!). But over time, something shady started to happen. The show — which appeared to be so authentic when it first aired — took a weird turn. Suddenly, we weren't...

Sunday’s episode of “American Idol” featured a young man named Israel McFarland whose religious upbringing caused him to rebel against his mother with his songs. During his audition, he was encouraged by judge Katy Perry, who also used music to rebel against her pastor parents. After McFarland walked into the audition space and introduced himself, Perry said his name was “interesting," prompting him to share its origin. “My parents like to name us all names from the Bible,” McFarland revealed. The 21-year-old opened up about his family, claiming they were very strict with him growing up. He said his mom...

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Director of the National Institute of Allergy, and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), has been a constant fixture in the media since the outbreak of COVID-19 in late 2019. Despite the relaxation of mandates and the falling virus death rates in the United States, Fauci continues to generate media attention. He loves the media, and they love his “doom and gloom” message. In recent weeks, Fauci has been advocating for all Americans to vaccinate, including young people, and warning about the dangers of new variants. This week, he appeared on a video for President Joe Biden. He called...

Well, Claudia Conway's American Idol audition finally aired. The daughter of former Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway and lawyer George Conway faced the judges during the season premiere of the singing competition's 19th season. The whole thing was...interesting. Here's what happened: As soon as Claudia walked onstage, judge Katy Perry immediately asked her, "Are you OK?" "No, but yes," Claudia replied. There was a brief montage featuring Conway's parents — yes, both of them. Kellyanne appeared via video call, whereas George was shown fist-bumping Claudia and waiting outside the studio during the audition. Again, just weird stuff to watch. As for...

"Good job at being racist and homophobic, American Idol." Those aren't my words, but they're the sentiments of plenty of fans after Sunday night's Disney-themed episode. After last night's votes were tallied, four of the show's minority contestants found themselves in elimination contention. Ada Vox, a drag queen, Jurnee, an openly gay and black contestant, Michelle Sussett, an immigrant from Venezuela, and Dennis Lorenzo, an African-American male, received the least votes after their performances. Jurnee was the only one to escape elimination. These four contestants were in the bottom because this is "Trump's America," according to some upset viewers.

Core Media Group, the company behind "American Idol" and "So You Think You Can Dance," has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in New York. "American Idol" was the company's biggest breadwinner. And now that the show has ended at Fox, the company is unable to find a similar source of revenue. The company has been seeing losses from a decline in "American Idol" ratings for several years now, however. In 2014,...

The cast from the past seasons, with Ryan Seacrest as host and Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. as judges, will return for a season-long celebration of the show’s history. “American Idol” faded over the past few years, eclipsed in the music competition genre it pioneered by “The Voice”...
