Israel forces have surrounded a jail in Jericho in the West Bank that holds a senior Palestinian prisoner. Ahmed Saadat, the leader of the leftist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, is held in Jericho under the supervision of US and UK guards. Witnesses in Jericho told the BBC that they had heard gunfire and explosions close to the prison. Recent reports say the Palestinian Authority has been considering freeing Mr Saadat who has been held since 2002.
