OKLAHOMA CITY — An endangered two-inch minnow called the Arkansas River shiner could drive farmers off their land because the federal government is making efforts to preserve the fish’s habitats. The U.S. Department of Fish & Wildlife has begun designating 1,100 miles of riverbank in four states as "critical habitats" to protect the threatened shiner. Some say the minnow isn’t even a significant link in the food chain, and fishermen don’t like to use it as bait. "Its value is not necessarily economic," said Jerry Brabander, an Oklahoma ecological field supervisor for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. "The value really is [that ...

NV Cattle Rustling: Ranchers and Local Law Enforcement Make Their Case for Due Process Sierra Times 08.03.01 Tonopah - The issue of state-sponsored cattle rustling has reached a fever pitch in northern Nevada and across the west. Both ranchers, and even local law enforcement are speaking out, while the Federal government is laying down their ultimatums. The Associated Press reported that Sheriff's deputies in at least two Nevada counties were poised to block federal agents from impounding cattle last week, until the U.S. Justice Department warned the local law officers they could face federal criminal prosecution if they interfered. But ...

the weekend's here. let's go shooting! i have been into muzzleloading since about the mid 70's. i took a long hiatus due to another expensive hobby (motorcycles) and had to give that up due to the expense but mainly to physical problems. i recently sold my big twin to a guy in indiana. i am in WA state. i will miss riding, but then again, i won't. anyway, my rifles have been in mothballs and were only taken out for an occasional oiling. now they are being prepared to hit the range again. i am waiting for some 'teflon sprayed' ...

Is Boston, the "cradle of liberty," bestirring after generations of somnambulating to the ancient siren call of its creed? Is the "Athens of America" reacquainting itself with genuine intellectual thought? Will the "Hub of the Universe" reclaim its moral birthright, which was as the champion of freedom and common sense? Will Boston once again view itself as the proverbial "City on the Hill?" Stay tuned, several recent initiatives point in that direction. Libertarian candidate for Governor Carla Howell will soon file an initiative petition to abolish the state´s personal income tax. Howell recently garnered 12% of the vote for US ...

Police will keep honkers moving By ANNE PAINE Staff Writer Anti-tax horn honkers will be prohibited from circling between the state Capitol and War Memorial Plaza on Charlotte Avenue if traffic gridlocks when lawmakers return Tuesday, according to Metro Police Chief Emmett Turner. Metro will station officers on Charlotte and, if necessary, on other nearby downtown streets to help make sure protesters lining the roadsides and motorists both are safe, he said. ''Should traffic on Charlotte Avenue come to a standstill, our police officers will be prepared to set up detours and prevent additional vehicles from further gridlocking the roadway,'' ...

BBC staff are told not to call Israeli killings 'assassination' By Robert Fisk, Middle East Correspondent 04 August 2001 In a major surrender to Israeli diplomatic pressure, BBC officials in London have banned their staff in Britain and the Middle East from referring to Israel's policy of murdering its guerrilla opponents as "assassination". BBC reporters have been told that in future they are to use Israel's own euphemism for the murders, calling them "targeted killings". BBC journalists were astonished that the assignments editor, Malcolm Downing, should have sent out the memorandum to staff, stating that the word "assassinations" "should only ...

There must be some kind of high to working for the first family, because it sure ain't the money. White House salary figures obtained by Washington Whispers show that for most posts–except the very top–annual pay is equal to or less than former President Clinton's rate of three years ago. In fact, President Bush's $23 million payroll is $84,000 less annually than Clinton's in June 1998, although he's employing about the same number of staffers. And that's despite hiking the top rate from $125,000 to $140,000 for close aides including Chief of Staff Andrew Card, spokesman Ari Fleisher, aides Karen ...

Did anybody see that farce last night on Larry King? I was skimming past CNN when I stopped momentarily because I thought I was going to have a chance to call in and ask Hitlery some pointed questions. But of course, it was taped. Anyway, it was the female knuckle draggers of the senate including Kay Bailey Hutchinson who was gushing that she is such good friends with Diane Feinswine that she could never campaign against her. I have always suspected that once you get there, you change but now it has been verified. So much for trying to take ...

Influence On Bush administration ___________________Too much___Too little Wealthy people----------------72%------------05%---- Oil and gas industries--------67%------------07%---- People like you----------------01%------------67%---- The problem with this poll question is who in their right mind is going to say we don't have enough wealthy people influencing things? Who would ever answer a poll by saying that there is "too little" influence by wealthy people and that there needs to be more? So of course everyone's going to mark "too much."

Speaking of Condit's voting record, he actually has a pretty fair record of showing up to vote. I am trying to track down his record for every year. So far, I learned that in 1997, there were 640 votes cast that year, and he missed just 8 votes. 98.75% rate. Puts him in the top quarter of the house. This year, he attended all votes until May 17th. He was in town too. That is the kicker... well he was in town that morning. There was just a routine procedural vote at 10:26 that morning. He showed up for that. ...

Hispanic Indians spur state growthCalifornia overtakes Oklahoma as the state with the most people who claim Indian heritage.BY JOHN HUBNERKNIGHT RIDDER NEWSPAPERSFRESNO In the past 10 years, California's American Indian population grew so fast the state displaced Oklahoma as home to the most Indians. That remarkable growth comes not from an upswing in Americans proudly claiming Indian heritage or even from last year's more accurate census count, but from a more unlikely source: Indians immigrating in vast numbers from Mexico. The American Indian population in California grew by 38 percent and nationwide by 26 percent, according to the 2000 ...

Administration reverses policy on labor agreements as Teamsters support energy bill By Leigh Strope, Associated Press, 8/4/2001 12:07 WASHINGTON (AP) The energy bill passed by the House includes a promise that jobs created by new drilling in an Alaskan wildlife refuge will favor organized labor. The measure, tucked away on page 487 of the 510-page bill passed last week, runs counter to one of President Bush's first actions as president, in which he barred such labor agreements from all federal projects. The inclusion of the agreement helped convince the Teamsters union to support the Bush energy plan. ''Crucial? No. Important? ...

MARY JO WHITE:Probe not winding down. August 4, 2001 -- Probers in the Clinton pardon investigation are still hard on the case and recently subpoenaed documents from Roger Clinton's manager, sources said yesterday. New details of the investigation emerged amid reports that prosecutors are winding down the Pardongate case after failing to find evidence of any crimes. But Manhattan U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White denied investigators were wrapping up the probe, issuing her update on the case just one day after a Justice Department official raised the possibility President Bush could oust White before she's done. "The investigation is ...
